Anybody use something like this?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JEX-FB4554/ The best I can tell, it is the same design as a Flowmaster 40-series dual.

I have full dual exhaust with a crossover pipe. I want to add an anti-wrap bar to the rear axle and am considering swapping to a dual/dual muffler like this. The 40 series single is too loud, but these duals are about 19" long, so I'm confused whey they share the same number.

I'm not totally opposed to a Y collector, single muffler and single tailpipe, but I've grown used to exhaust on both sides and the dual/dual muffler is actually a pretty simple solution.

summit also has one from dynaflow that is basicaly an X pipe with a muffler wrapped around it. they show a cut away of it in the catalog. $100 and its full stainless

Ya like the dual tip, run it like i have set up cars in the past, run a 2.5 off the manifolds into a 3" pipe feeding into either a 3" in/out cat, or into a single 3" in muffler and dual 2.5's out near the rear, have the pipes bent and ran to each side of the rear bumper. Still has a nice sound, usually alot less raspy sound due to the longer tailpipes too.

I had my Camaro and Nova setup identical, both had different sounds, but they also had different cats on them too. Those will make a big difference in sound quality too.

Less materials under the truck to be in the way of things or repairs later down the road too.:waytogo:

I have one of these mounted under my K-5. Sounds great I'll get some pictures for ya...

he he,,,, pictures of mufflers, i have an interesting one for ya....

temporary setup, as i had crushed the crossover pipe on the last offroad trip i was on, excessive exhaust backpressure was causing problems with the motor. scrap pipe, some left over mufflers from a Mustang Cobra and this is what we got. :doah:

it's ugly, but it works :D

:haha::haha::haha:

I have one of those behind the 388SB in my regal Blue, dual in/out flowmaster(it's actually in the GN kit). Sounds good, works nice, only kills about 20 horse according to my ETs vs open headers, which is a lot less than I expected to be honest.

i like the sound of a single flowmaster better than 2 of them. and if you dont want a lot of inside droooning sound crusin get a 50-up series not the 40.

and watch ebay if your not in a hurry. i have scorred new or like new takeoff flowmasters for less than 50 bucks and thats for 100-150 new mufflers. :eek1:

and 50 bucks on ebay included shipping. there is still some deals to be hed there.

and if y-pipe route here http://www.jegs.com/p/Flowmaster/Flowmaster-Y-Collectors/744773/10002/-1

I'm just not convinced that 40, 50, 80, etc. is very specific anymore. There are the "old" style, the "new" style and the Delta-flow. But these Dual/Dual models don't really seem based on the same designs anyway. I'll probably end up getting an off-brand stainless model anyway.

So is the single muffler quieter than two separate ones?

I'm kinda partial to the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers, it's what i used on both my Camaro and the Nova. They don't seem to have that "tinny" canny sound notorious from a Flowmaster.

I used to love my aerochambers on my small block, they sounded great I thought, were stainless inside, and nice quality. They are also very quite at idle and low RPM. However, with my big block now, they are near embarassing with that darn higher pitch "barking" sound when the secondaries start to open. I think it's that perforated chamber that makes that sound, and the longer I have them the more I hate it, sounds closer to a glass pack. The flowmasters are a deeper, more powerful sound, and I will probably ditch the aerochambers and get some 70 series flows before next summer.

I will say the aerochambers impress me with how quiet they are at lower RPMs, especially considering the fact that if you were to get center in/out, you could literally slide the pipe all the way through the muffler and it would clear and slide out the other side. Thats how well they could flow! When I first received them, I was worried they were going to be too loud, and they are loud during WOT, but at cruise and low RPM, they are pretty quiet.

how long are the tailpipes, and what diameter?

when i had them on the two cars i drove, they were the ons designed for stock placement on the Camaro, right between the gas tank and the rear diff, single 3" inlet at the top driver side, then dual 2.5" outlets on either side of the muffler and they ran close to about 3-4 feet of tailpipe i would guess out to the rear bumpers, one on each side.

I have noticed through the years of seeing friends exhaust systems, and running several different variations on previous vehicles of my own, that diameter of tailpipe and length have a HUGE difference in exiting sound tones.

also those Cats will seriously change that tone as well, i personally prefer to run with Cats, they seem to help with that raspy sound.

how long are the tailpipes, and what diameter?

2 1/4" mandrel bent, probably 6-7 ft long or so just guessing, factory muffler location, with side exit behind the rear tires. Hooker BB headers with no cats.

I will say, with those 2 1/4 pipes and that 489 at idle, it's like an air pulse massage if you stand ~3-4 ft away from the tailpipe exit. Funny stuff.

Sorry to hijack blue, I wouldn't be afraid of the dual in/out flows, I like mine on the Regal. Sounds good.

i personally don't care for the 2.25 pipes, i sold off a set of mufflers because of that only. I have heard too many that have that raspy sound and they usually have that smaller diameter pipe. just an opinion though :D

Well to be honest when I switch them out, I'm going dual 3". And 70 series so it's not super loud. I find it hard to believe the small pipes would cause that sound, but I suppose it's possible.

well, what happens when you clinch your ass when you fart, it changes the sound :D let it loose, nice deep rumble tone :D

And maybe more...:eek1:

Anything I've heard with those JC Whitney <2" pipes has sounded like squirrels farting in a coffee can. But I've seen some 2.25 that sounded OK. My dual 2.5" system doesn't sound any deeper than my old dual 2.25"

with the pics i posted, i'm currently running 2.5" all the way off the headers, without the Cats, i really don't care for the sound, it almost sounds like an old farm truck or something, it's got the tone, but it's hard to explain, i think i like them alittle more muffled, which is why i prefer running the Cats.

When i get it all redone, IF, i get it all redone and not decide to scrap this thing,,, it will be running stock manifolds again, 2.5" crossover pipe into a 3" main, through a big Cat and a decent sized muffler to quiet it down, but still retain alittle rumble, most likely single 3" all the way back, possibly dual 2.5" out, not sure yet on the exit design.

Before this,i had a 70 series Flowmaster and factory pancake style Cat, it sounded nice, was pretty quiet with the full tailpipe, removed it and gained alittle louder rumble from it, some days i was annoyed with it, others it was fine, just depends on the mood i guess :D

Made the mistake of selling that muffler...:doah:

I had this one installed today.

You'll notice it looks just like the Flowmaster. It's pretty loud - sounds like a muscle car. I'll have to post more impressions once I've had it on the highway and such.

You can see that I didn't pay much for the muffler, so it's not a huge commitment. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Performance-muffler-2-CHAMBER-2-1-2-dual-out-USA-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a656a4736QQitemZ250809567030QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories The old mufflers were polished stainless - so I'll probably make more back selling them.

Here's a pic. It took the guy a while to make all of these bends, but it turned out really nice. There is a tailpipe to each side of the truck.
