carb ID..confusing as hell!..
The carb that looks just like a Q-jet, but has no secondary barrels IS a "Dual-Jet",but differs greatly from the other 2 bbl "Dual Jet" carbs used in the 60's and 70's (2GC Rochester)..they didn't appear until 1978,when GM started to "lighten up" everything on cars and trucks to reduce emissions and increase mileage..I saw lots of those on Oldsmobiles in the junkyards,on V8 motors like the 265 and 307 Olds..
There is another carb called a "Vari-Jet" that was a 2 bbl carb,as pictured in one of the previous posts, used mostly on 267 and 305 Chevy motors and some Buick V6's..has a triangle shaped air cleaner air horn, and 2 barrels of the same size..they were good carbs,I had one on a 267 El-Camino--no trouble ever with the carb..
Another "Vari-Jet" 2 bbl completely different was used on 250 straight sixes and the 2.5 4 bangers in Chevy Citations and AMC Concordes..it was a progressive 2 barrel, and had a small primary, and large secondary barrel--in fact, its a Q-jet sawed in half down the middle,basically!..I had a few of them, they all had flat spots on acceleration..I considered them one of the WORST carbs GM ever used...
Carter did make some Q-jets--not sure if it was a deal struck with GM to make their carbs due to them not being able to keep up with production or what--Carter made Q-jets were put on most all vehicles including trucks, not just muscle cars..I had a few,and felt they ran better than the Rochester ones I had..
GM actually sold the 2GC Rochester carbs to Mopar in 1971,when Carter went on strike, and Chrysler was in a bind!--I've seen several 318 Mopars that year with Rochester carbs factory--they bolt on and fit just like a Carter 2 bbl, even use the same choke!..I have a 2 bbl Carter "style" 2 bbl made by Holley(its an "economaster") on my 73 307 Chevy motor--it bolts right on,even the choke is identical, and it took little modification to make the throttle and detent cables fit..I like it,it gives good mileage and decent performance..
