how much time and money do you guys have invested altogether? inetersting swap, definetly go me thinking:thinking:

You'd be lucky to get ahold of a newer complete 8.1L engine for any less than $2500-$3500. But you have to consider your getting the engine outta a $40K truck! ;)
Frame and firewall interfere a bit.
Sending out the harness and reworking it can be like $400 or you can try and figure it out yourself- which ended up taking a couple of weeks.. Another couple hundred for computer reprogramming depending on what your setup is, getting a performance tune, and to delete the Anti Theft System.
Probably another few hundred to do the whole fuel system.
Then theres the little things that nickle and dime you also, air filter, synthetic oil, filter, oil cooler and lines.. etc.. getting all your gauges to work..

Labor? one long weekend to get it in there and most everything hooked up...
But it took another few weeks to figure out how to get it running! Theres a bit of voodo magic involved in swapping these engines over. :wink1: GM did not want their newer trucks & suvs to be stolen!!!
Between my 6.0 and kevins 8.1, over a hundred hours of research to make everything work.

that would be an awsome swap to do. believe me i know all about the nickel and diming, i did an lt1 swap and it kills ya, and thats nowhere near as bad as that swap. now if you were to do it again i imagine it would be alot easier, or is that voodoo magic a hard thing to get around? what about exhaust and motor mounts, where the hell can you even find one? damn you got the wheels turning!:D

Start saving and we could probably set you up with a turnkey package setup by tax return time. A turnkey 8.1 is not gonna be cheap though. I'm looking for a 6.0 for another ck5 member right now..
I better start searching for more engines. :wink1:

it wouldnt be for a good 6 months to a year, i still gotta buy a new project:o but i would be interested no doubght!

thats awesome. always wanted to see a dually burnout. what did he do about the trans? did his bolt up?

he is using the th400 that came with the truck. I think that part of it bolted up, but im not 100% sure about that.

I've got an 8.1 I was thinking of using in my k5 sitting in the garage. It's low mileage but might need a little work. I just dont have the time to do the swap let alone the cash to work up the electronics. I might be convinced to let it go if somebody wants it. Shoot me a email at [email protected]

Glad to see somebody got it figured out though..
