My neighbor just bought a really clean '96 Sub 2wd 5.7, 165k well main't highway miles and the check engine lite is on. It's code >>> p0420 and p0430 catalysts efficiency low bank 1 and 2. That's the REAR sensors, after the converters.

The local Goodyear disaster said it's the converters, and the 02 sensors are OK. That's where I came in. My neighbor was heating up the manifold studs with a propane torch. I made him take it down off the jacks, and to the FLAP, and that's where we got the codes.

The Bosch sensors there are $60 each, and eBay has Borg Warner for $33 shipped.

A friend works in the emissions business, but hundreds of miles away. He says the converters should be OK, even tho the Goodyear shop rapped on them, and they rattled. I didn't hear any rattle, and it runs fine. We also changed the PCV valve, and carefully checked for vacum leaks.

I'd have taken a pix, but I have trouble with 2wd TEERUKS... Lol...

There is a PCM update that deals with those codes, common problem. Go to the dealer and have the update flashed. It may still need new catalysts to fix it though. The codes don't really have anything to do with the rear sensors, weak sensors rarely cause P0420,430 codes.
