Dumb question about distributors

Did the 91 K5s come stock with HEI? I picked up a 91 K5, new to me a few months ago and have finally gotten around to giving it a tune up. I thought it was HEI and bought an MSD HEI tune up kit which according to Summitt, is for this vehicle. Went to put it in today and duh... saw that the coil on my truck is separate from the distributor cap. So my question is, do I have HEI? Can you have HEI without having the coil sit in the cap? As you can tell, I'm not too familiar with HEI.

You have the small cap HEI that was used with fuel injected motors. The parts kit you probably got was for the big cap HEI used with carbs.

You'll have to return it, the cap rotor and coil are different on the '87 to '95 trucks. You can get the parts seperate but I don't think they sell them as a kit. Part number for the cap and rotor is 8564 and 8427. the coil is 8231. I'm running the MSD dist. with a 6A box and love it.
