duramax in a K5?? can it be done

An S-10 will never be able to handle the wieght and power of an izuzu diesel, unless it is super tiny.

really!.... and how easy is the cummins swap being that it isn't a engine chevy used?

Comments like this make me want to do it.

No it isnt a bolt it in and go... but it is do able.

I currently have a reg cab 2wd S-10 that I drive daily. 29k miles in a year. So, that adds up fast. I am already thinking of what to swap in. I keep coming back to deisels. I think make a Cummins 4bt is what I may do.

Damn, I kind of hijacked didnt I? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I agree with Ken. Thats like saying an S10 would never hold a Big Block. No one has ever tried that, huh? /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

easy and swap in the same sentence?

everything is easy it is just a matter of doing it.

Tell that to the guy on TDR who is dropping (may already have it done, its been a while) a 6bt into an s-10.

the 6.5 is also a piece of crap
if you can get one dirt cheap then maybe
but it isn't in the same league as a Cummins swap

I have seen some 6.5Turbo's that will flat out eat lots of Cummins motors. People have lots of bat thoughts about 6.2 and 6.5 Chev diesels, but if properly maintained and worked on by somebody that has a clue what they are doing, there is nothing wrong with either one of them. One of the biggest problems with them was the stock head gaskets... so people would replace the gaskets and put them back together w/ the original head bolts... big no no. They use a stretch to fit head bolt that is a 1 time use item. If you take them out, get new to put back in.
Oh, my friend has a 2wd Chev w/ a 6.5T that is modified a bit and it will run a 13.5 second 1/4 and gets 30 mpg empty, and between 20-25 towing his 3800lb Camaro on a steel trailer...

put 40 psi of boost to it and see if it holds up.
not in the same league as the 6BT.

nobody said anything about putting 40lbs of boost to anything... all I was saying is that the 6.5 is not a crap motor... just got a bad rap because of people doing sh!t to them that don't know the dynamics of the motor.
If someone is looking to do a diesel swap into a K5... the 6.5T is definetly a viable option as a more simple swap as opposed to the Cummins or the Duramax... and can be made to get great mpg and perform very well.

I'm sure a totally badass 6.5 bomber could beat a mild cummins....do the same mods to the cummins and it is clearly out of a 6.5's league.

I definantly agree that the 6.5's and 6.2's are very good motors, thats not really an issue. But the bottom line is they are low output engines compared to what else is available. They are great motors stock and will easely outlast the truck they are in but....the GM diesels won't handle a lot of power. Sure, you can turn the pump up and do a few other nicknacks to a 6.2 but I have read that the bottom end will only take about 450lbs of torque RELIABLY. That is less than my STOCK ISB cummins. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good for him, thats very impressive for a 6.5.

A modified 4WD 1 ton long bed quad cab lifted dodge will run 12's all day long with heavy mods. Do some of the newest tricks and drop into the 11's. Oh, and thats a 7,500 lbs truck. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Go for it, I really don't care. but a stock S-10 front end will have a hard time holding up a large inline 6. Now, if the frame is completely boxed, heavy duty suspension, and 1 ton axles under it than it would probably work great.

Well that deserves a big ol' woopie cookie....I don't mean to piss on your cheerios, but I didn't really think this post was about which diesel could be HEAVILY MODIFIED to be the most badass... I thought it was originally about putting a Duramax in a K5, which then blossomed into what diesel would be worth while putting in a K5. I was just trying to point out that the 6.5T is NOT as bad of a motor as the majority of people think. I was not arguing that the Cummins isn't a bad ass motor... but if I was looking for a diesel for the average back yard mechanic to swap into a K5, that wouldn't be it...

Get a good 6.5 Turbo core, and have it built right. You can get them with a mechanical pump. Turn the pressure up a LITTLE, advance the line timing, get a Limit Engineering built turbo, a mandrel bent 3.5" down pipe, a K&N filter, and a big Flowmaster. It'll FLY in a Blazer, especially if you put 3.73 gears in it like an M1009 military Blazer, or better yet 4.10 gears. The stock 6.2 in the M1009 Blazers runs real good with the 3.73.

With regards to the Detriot Diesel, the old two strokes were loud, and had to be wound up tight. With the right gears and transmission, they'll pull, and they'll fly. The baddest heavy truck diesel I ever drove was an 8V92TTA in a 359 Pete with a 10 over 5 Dana Spicer and 3.70 Rockwells. Put a sign on the back that read "Here kitty kitty kitty". CAT is a good engine, but Cummins was the worst junk I ever drove, on a regular basis.

The new Duramax trucks I've been driving are the best all around light truck diesels I've driven. Far better than either the Dodges or Fords I've driven. The old 6.5 we had with the K&N, downpipe, and Flowmaster pulled as good or better than any equally modified Cummins or Navistar.

I'm not much on "racing diesels", if I want fast, I want gas.

how much can you get a 6.5T for?
I have friends that have paid $10-15000cdn to have the dealer replace dead 6.5s
the first time I thought the guy was BSing but another told me similar story

how much can you get a 6BT for?

Well to clarify, the NPR Isuzu is an inline four. turbo charged. and they came auto and manual. so they may fit in the s-10's
only the FRR's came with the 6 cylinder engines.

hehe food for thought.

The question isn't how much can you get a 6BT for... using this logic you would have to ask what would you have to "pay a dealer" to install a 6BT...
When you are using the 10-15K Dealer figure, how much is parts and how much is labor? That is why I suggested for the average backyard mechanic, the 6.2 or 6.5T is a more feasable swap... but to each his own. There may be LOTS of people who have the ability to put a Duramax or a Cummin's in a K5, but I think the majority of people don't have the ability, or the $$$$$ to pay someone to do it.

What is this about paying a dealer to put somethin on you truck.....HEll no.....get a welder, a couple of friends and maybe some beer. you'll be fine. thats what i did to rip the engine outa my grand national. and i'll do that come time to put it back in. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif my advice if you want it. learn to do it your self you'll have more fun that way.

screw the dealer

Bottom line a K5 Duramax set up is the way to go. I'm gonna do it in a few years when i'm outta school and have some real sized paychecks. Plus by then you will be able to come across the motors for less money. Yes it would be very expensive to do but it would be worth every penny. Most people think the Duramax was designed for towing but it was really designed to be modified and chipped so it could put in a hard days work and on the way home win a few races against people who think they have high perfomance cars that run on rice. Outta the box though you have 300Hp and 520 ft/lbs at the flywheel. The duramax only weighs 835 lbs due to the aluminum cylinder heads. The cummins is a good engine but they are much heavier and unless its the new HO they dont come with that much power to start with. With propane, chip and nitrous you easily have 1000 ft/lbs at the wheels provided you have a sustainable drivetrain. K5's are known to be really cool rides but not fast ones. . .smoking a GT mustang would be no problem with the duramax and a few mods inside of a K5 which is lighter than a fullsize 3/4 ton 4wd pickup. If a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup can run 12-13 second quarter miles then a K5 can do better! Ohh and plus diesels get better mileage. .. where the K5 really lacks with performance gasoline engines. Nobody can argue that a duramax wouldnt be an awsome engine in a K5 provided you can accomplish the install.
