Duramax Suburban - IFS Rebuild

This thing flattens mountains. Cruise set at 70 out of Truckee, damn thing didn't even shift to make it up the grade.

15mpg towing so far. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1441990524.377358.jpg

I have this theory, which is probably wrong... But that they didn't do them on the burbs because they couldn't give it a high enough tow rating with only a bumper pull trailer option so the added expense of the dmax would be difficult to justify. It's a stupid reason but I can just imagine the decision makers saying something in a meeting like, the trailer hitch is rated for 10k pounds, the 6.0 is rated for 10k pounds and the dmax is rated for 15k pounds. Fk it. Let's make things cheaper and easier on ourselves by only offering the 6.0/8.1.

Think about the cost too.

Price of a burb + Duramax upgrade fee...would have probably priced a lot of people out of the market.

I cant believe that. look how many diesel excursions were sold. and are still being sold for mid 20s because there are no other options in that market.

I think the problem is they got burned from soccer moms back in the 90s thinking diesels were only big smelly loud stinky dirty things. modern diesels are nothing like that, but its just perception in peoples minds. like that BMW commercial from a few years ago...

Awesome rig man! I'd love to have one as well but part of me is sad for your 91 cause I've always loved seeing pics of you using it. However I can see where towing a boat with the Dmax would be way more enjoyable than a tbi350. I'm happy to get my 89 back together but I'm also kind of kicking myself for just rebuilding my tbi 350 and not doing some sort of swap.

A good 2500 burb is hard to find and it's crazy they didn't make many cause lots of people with family's like a good rig for pulling campers and boats. What rearend does the Dmax burb have in it?

Don't know much about the D-max, other than it is incredibly difficult to retrofit into a square body.

I wish there was some kind of aftermarket stand alone control system available for it...

You have a good looking sleeper of a rig. Give the cummins guys a run for the $$. :pimp:

And a big +1 for the excursion. I've been eyeballing them for a while. Still damn high because they own that demographic.

You're forgetting that the 7.3L was the only decent engine Ford had in them. The weak, spark plug spitting 5.4L and the anemic 6.8L V10 weren't exactly selling points.

Well to be fair there's probably more sold with 6.0s than with the 7.3. Although they probably died off long time ago lol. But more to the point when they made the marketing decision it wasn't becusse ford said hey the rest of our engines are garbage. Let's throw the diesel in.
