Duramax Suburban - IFS Rebuild

Thanks guys. It's got the 11.5 rear end in it I think. The 1 ton diesel axle.

I'm sad about not using the 91 all the time, but it was a move that had to be made. Excited to get some time to wheel the 91 a bit more now

Well, starting to attack the little fixes that need to happen.

First one that was bugging me was the rear axle was leaking out the axle shaft flange on both sides, and streaking the wheels after highway time.

Same design as the 14ff, pulled them apart, sealed them up. Hopefully they hold!

Next will be adding an AUX cord to the PAC adapter already in the truck, wiring up a new trailer plug, and hard wiring the V1.

Little things. Then, I'll get into some maintenance, and probably change rear diff fluid, and possibly transfer case.

Between 14 and 18. Its tough, cause my commute is up/down about 1500 ft, and i'm cruising at 80 most of the time.

I'll report back when i have some flat land time.

Doing well though! Will look into a tune once i get it through smog.

That's not bad even if you average those numbers. Sure some of the trucks get better than that, but at least it's not 8mpg's like my old 8.1 got.

Good mileage, My 2003 1/2 ton is only averaging 15mpg.

I'm stoked on it. At least 50% improvement from 10mpg of the 6.0 or 8.1

Now I gotta get the fuel tank stuff sorted out so I can go more than 300 miles on the odometer trip meter. Only running on 22 gal with no fuel gauge

Been working through some little things. It had a good pac aux setup on the stock radio, just needed the right cable for standard aux input.

New fog lights, washed it, and put on a new trailer plug. Had been getting current bleed from brakes to turn, and a new trailer plug and rear light jbox fixed it.

I tow a lot of different flat 5 wire trailers, as most ski boats still use flat 5. So, this badass plug has both round 7 and flat 5, fit the stock bracket, and I get to throw away all my adapters!!!image.jpegimage.jpeg

Good! Been moving, and with temps in the teens and night and 30's during the day, ive been avoiding the dmax for short trips in the cold. The old 350 is a lot happier in those temps.

Plus, my move was only about 500 yards.

Got a good review at work, so treated myself to some of the nice tow mirrors. Will post up pics when i install.

Need to figure out the HVAC, all the temp and blend actuators are messed up. And still need to reseat the tank seal.

Learned that all these motors come with block heaters, so i've been plugging it in over night when i plan to drive it.

Besides that, its been good. Super comfortable on the freeway, tons of power, and tows awesome.

Its been nice to take down into reno when i need to make home depot runs at night.

Can't wait to get the new garage settled so i can work on it a bit more. House projects have been taking priority, but its been running good and earning its keep none the less.

My LB7 is happy to start down to around -30C or so. I'm amazing when guys worry about starting them at -10 haha!

Mine has always started in the cold as long as I have good batteries. I've had bad luck with hopkins connectors. Despite putting dielectric grease etc I always have to replace it every 2-3 years. They just don't seal up well.

It will start, just not very happily. And id rather not start it that cold just to drive it down the block.

If it was my only truck, i'd do it a lot more, but i have no need to. Plus, i like making the 91 still earn its keep locally.

Have you gotten any weird looks when you pull up the diesel pump at the gas station?

No, but people here and there notice. A good test of someone is a real car guy.

Yes. I occasionally get interesting looks when I pull my step-side K10 up to the diesel pump. Shows me who notices car things. To everyone else, it's just another rig at another fuel pump somewhere.

Got a good review at work, so rewarded myself with a set of tow mirrors. I've wanted a rig with these for years. For a long time I wanted a 96-99 white 3/4 ton with these mirrors, and when buying the Dmax, I knew these were in the plans.

Bought some aftermarket ones off of amazon. Definitely not the cheapest, but didn't want to buy cheap aftermarket ones. Have had bad luck with cheap replacement mirrors in the past.

Only drove once, but these seem like quality units. image.jpeg

Put the old ones on Craigslist if anyone wants them. I'll make you a deal.
