"Reading online where 275 is about as big as recommended for the h2 wheels. "

That is definilty a tire size reference. I'm not saying I disagree with you. I'm just wondering where that info comes from or if it's aimed more towards the h3 wheels?

I had the same question. I've heard lots of conflicting advice about how wide of a tire can be put on a given rim. :dunno:

I can't remember the site but I spent a day browsing and Googling info for tire sizes to fit my 2500HD without more lift and came across some site where the members were all preaching about too tall of tires affecting the performance of the Allisons and trying to keep the powerband in an acceptable range. Somewhere among all the posts is where I read 275's and 285's being the split.

I'm pretty sure this was all on a diesel site. It's been a while since I browsed it so I couldn't tell you which one it was.
 
I also remembered now that I had been browsing and Googling for info on the largest tires I could put on a stock 16.5 dually wheel so that's where I found the info about the H2 wheels and the more I delved into it the tranny issue came up so I started checking those out, too.

It's a mess. Became a cluster so I left it alone. Looks like I'm opening up a can of worms right now. :doah:

How can you have a blanket rule for tire sizes that doesn't account for axle gearing? That doesn't make sense at all. :screwy:

My Suburban has 305's on 17" wheels and I think previous owner added a rear leaf and cranked the front up a hair. I had to trim the inner wheelwell but it was just plastic (no metal banging).

LOL. Yeah I'd say the worms are on the loose. I would be surprised if the factory would issue a too wide tire on a factory rim and vehicle
 
I wouldn't worry at all about tossing 285s on the factory wheels. Its not recommended but so many have run them and not had problems.
I also wouldn't go bigger than 285 regardless of the wheel. Any wider than that they look too balloony under stockish height/suspension and often stick out of the fenders. On My former NBS Tahoe I ran 285s on 16x8s at stock height and they rubbed like crazy when I turned. I maxed out the stock keys and got about 1.5" up and it helped a lot. I still had to shave a little bit of the forward bottom of the plastic inner fender liner to prevent rubbing on hard lock in reverse though. But with you being at 2" already and being able to crank the stock keys you'll have plenty of room. Again worst-case you might have to trim a little plastic.

Am I the only one who thinks that tire looks like it's going to touch under loading? That's not much clearance for a droop shot. :dunno:

I guess I'll hafta wait for the on-the-ground shot to see how it turns out. :popcorn:

I'll post tonight some better pics and what I cut away inside the wheel well.

Oh, and BTW, the hoist shot was my wonderful T-case pinhole repair while towing through Montana. Blew Tcase fluid under truck and coated the whole underside of boat. :(

Oil floats well, though. I'd think that oil-coating the underside of the boat would be a good thing? :dunno:

Yea, I kinda thought it might make it go faster in the water...you know, because it's the special "AutoTrak" oil. Green, so it must be environmentally safe.:haha:
