Duramax Suburban - IFS Rebuild

I use that method to split bearing races...

Most guys I've seen at shops use a cutoff wheel to slice the pitman arm close to the splines ,then a quick blast with an air chisel to finish the "split" and it drops off pretty easily..seeing there is no room for a puller, this is their way to cheat and save time & labor..

I guess some trucks though, dont have enough clearance to get the arm off the box splines and it has to be loosened or removed to get it off and install the new one..

Yeah. Didn't' like the idea of cutting in that close of quarters. But that was my next move if heat and puller didn't get it off.

Another trick I was taught by an old mechanic to remove an outer bearing race from something like a front pinion bearing that no puller can be used on--he took his arc welder and ran 3 beads (puddle) on the center of the race in triangle fashion, spaced evenly apart--after a few minutes when everything cools off,the race will shrink enough to allow it to be pulled out with a pick tool..

Glad everything worked out well for you! Had me worried for a bit when it wouldn't crank with that second battery disconnected haha

And now....i've got a dead starter.

Drove it for a day or 2 to work, then parked it. Went to start today, all systems powered up, just a click of the starter.

Start wire and 12v wire have power at starter when key is turned. From what i hear, the dmax starters suck to replace. Teardown tomorrow night, starter here Tuesday, need it back together before the weekend.

They are not horrible to replace. Just really heavy. It'll just squeeze out past your torsion bars. Always something, hey? I drove the caddy to work today and discovered I have a boost leak. Sounds like someone letting air out of a balloon when it makes boost lol

Lol, boost leak sounds all bad.

Everyone talks about a heat shield that is tough to remove. Not seeing one on mine, probably got left off by the builder.

Will look into a replacement.

Probably why your starter died if it is missing

Yep. When you do the starter on this, is there an actual starter shield? If so, anyone have a parts diagram or part number? If not, I’ll use a universal wrap.

Got the starter out. 30 min, very impressed, not bad at all. And about half the weight of the old 91 starter.:haha:

After playing with the Bendix, it worked on jumper cables, but that’s a false positive. New Delco pro starter here tmr.

Thanks guys.
