So, tell me if this is a dumb idea.

We should know (or be able to figure out) the driveline losses in these rigs.

Would it make sense to find a dyno, and do a pull with my truck, to find out how much power its "lost" due to motor age?

Would hate to drop a crate motor in, to find out mine was fine and the damn thing was always this slow.....

Better and more fun to find an old road test, look up the 1/4 mile times and go to a dragstrip:D

Brands of dynos read drastically different. Parasitic loss is also changed by many factors.

Yep. I remember reading one of the more learned engine builders was seeing different results on identical builds, then figured out the dyno's were what was inconsistent. Maybe that has changed with more modern setups, but it is still a potential factor.

I think the track would be more fun. :)

The only way you would ever know if there was a loss is by having your truck dyno'd with the old engine then either rebuild it or install a new engine and have it dyno'd again at the SAME SHOP on the SAME DYNO to compare before/after results. Just for reference though i've heard on a 4WD you lose about 30% through the running gear. There are always going to be variables though as to which trans/t-case is being used.

Use a leak tested to find out just how big a pile you have.
