Just wondering with e 85 having about a 105 octane content jus wondering anyone convert their rigs to run e 85 for performance reasons? My knowledge is really limited here jus wondering.

All I know is that my F150 is flex-fuel and can run E85, but I choose not to because it sucks when I do. I have heard that if you build an engine to run just on E85 that you do get performance gains. Unfortunately, that is just hearsay, so I have nothing good to give you.

Octane does not equal performance. Peroid. All it allows you to do is run higher compression ratios and more timing advance. That is where performance gains show up.
Ethanol acually burns cooler than gas and has less BTUs so = Less power.

To convert an older non flex fuel gas rig to E-85 and keep the same, or build more power you would have to totally rebuild the engine to run a higher compression ratio. Re jet the carb or Reprogram the computer if it is EFI. Then You would be limited to running E85 only, and fuel MPG would go out the window.

lots of stuff to consider.

-e85 only has about 87000 btu/gallon, which is quite a bit less than "pure" gas (114000). do some math and come up with what e10 has. still more than e85.

-you can make up for it being wimpier with the high octane rating which allows higher compression engines.

-but, your mpg will still suffer because e85 requires a lower air/fuel ratio. "pure" gas needs 14.7:1 at sea level. e10 is more like 14.1:1 iirc, and e85 is around 11.1:1, so your eating a lot more fuel for the same amount of air.

i think most people would spend extra money because the price is not low enough to compensate for the loss in mpg.
