I put a 79 14 bolt under my 1/2 ton 87 Suburban. I read in some old posts that there is a way to modify the ends of the clip type e-brake cables so they can mount into the older bolt in style that I have on the 14 bolt. Does anyone have a photo of one of these? Thanks.

You just need to get the earlier cables. I think the cut off is 1984 for the cable change.

I understand but besides being set up differently, they are different lengths than the original. I'm thinking that if I just buy the two new rearmost cables, I wouldn't be able to hook it them up to the existing cables. That's why I'm interested in how the 1/2 ton ones might be modified to fit. Thanks.

Don't think that would work as the earlier design used equal length cables on each side of the vehicle and the later used 2 different length cables down the driver side and then the passenger side crossed over the diff to the back plate. It would be easier to install the correct brake backing plates for the later cables.

Arggghhhhh... I sold them along with the old axle!

Just find some replacement backing plates, '83 on up. These will have the correct push-in style cables you need.

It isn't a 1/2T vs. 3/4T thing. It is just a year changover. If you get the cables for that axle, but for the year of your truck, it will hook up all factory. Get cables for an 87 suburban with a 14B axle.

The cables are different between the early and late style. The only way he can fix this is to grab the later model backing plates.

I was hoping to avoid that but what the heck. I wonder if they will be available at the wrecking yard without the rest of the axle! When I started this thread I was referring back to an old post (several years ago) that indicated there was a way to modify the newer cables to fit on the older backing plate setup. Anyhow, I'll see if I can find some newer backing plates. Thanks to all.

I haven't looked at them lately but I am sure there is a way to modify the cables to work on the other type backing plate.

I wish I had pics for you but you CAN modify the backing plates for the newer style cables IF you have a set of the OLD STYLE cables to modify.

What you need to do is seperate the bolt in piece (2 clamshelled sheet metal pieces that bolt into the backing plate) and cut a groove in the one that would bolt directly against backing plate. Slide your newer style cable through the slot and presto, new cables in old backing plate. They don't clip in but they will work just fine. I ran my old 3/4 ton K5 like that for 2-3 years with no issues whatsoever, I just wish I had taken pics. :doah:

Yea, that's the one, I think. Thanks. I'm going to a swap meet today so maybe I can find the parts I need.

i know this isnt what your wanting to do but nobody suggested it. have you thought about doing a disk brake setup? using caddy calipers you can have your E-brake. and alot better braking power.

If I had this whole deal to do over again, I would absolutely do as you suggest and swap the drums for discs. Now, however, everything is new so I'll stick with it for awhile. Then again...
