OK, so I've installed a Painless Harness into a 70 Bronco, a Centech Harness in a 81 CJ-5, but I've never ordered or installed an "E-Z Wiring" harness in my 82 K30.

Was just wondering if anyone has used or installed one before.(E-Z Wiring Harness)
Was it long enough for a long-bed truck?
Was it of decent Quality?
Was it labeled every 6-8inches?

Any pro's or con's that you can think of?

The reason I ask is they are really cheaply priced in comparison to all the other's and is that a reflection of the product.

Thanks in advance!
Deven

Was it long enough for a long-bed truck? yes I cut 5-6 feet off of the wires going to the back
Was it of decent Quality? yes. UV, Heat, and oil resistant. It was fairly large gauge wire too.
Was it labeled every 6-8inches? It was labeled well. I don't know if it was every 6-8" but that sounds close.

Any pro's or con's that you can think of? If you are wanting a direct replacement it might not be the best one, but if you are doing a custom setup I would use one again in a heartbeat. In fact I'll be using one in the Dart I'm building.
:D :waytogo:

I am actually curious about this as well. The Painless kits are pricey, but they are direct fit for the most part, but the E-Z kits look close and are supposed to include a lot of the GM connectors.

it took me a while, but I got the job done, and I had never tackled a wiring job bigger than fog lights before. It's not direct replacement like others said. It needs cutting, splicing, terminating, and TIME to put it in. Don't know about the other kits, didn't go that route because of price, but at times I wish I had just to get it done quicker. This coming from a COMPLETE WIRING NOOB.

I've used EZ-wiring on both my trail rig and my tow rig, they are awesome. Definitely long enough for a long bed and it's good quality stuff, they even come with many of the GM connectors (ignition switch etc).

They are a generic wiring harness but they cover everything you need for an old truck like this and more.

Cool, that's what I needed to know. Looks like I'll be ordering up their 21 circuit Harness. EZ-21 is the part #.
The reason for the 21 circuit harness is that you never know what you might add at a later date.

Thanks guys, that's the stuff I needed to know.

Time won't be a big deal, I will be working on a completely stripped body and I am in no rush. Hell, I should have been started 2 months ago, and I haven't even managed to get Krusty into the garage yet, let alone remove the body and all the other stuff.

Seems like it would be long enough for crew cab long bed, but thought I'd ask. That's a lot cheaper than the model specific kits.

You can't go wrong with a painless harness. I rewired my '75 ten years ago and it was one of the best investment I made in my Chevy. I ended with a ton of extra wire(and I have a long bed). If you can read and use a set of snips and wire crimpers, you'll be good to go. If I remember correctly, alot of it was preterminated. Painless all the way.

Yea, I've used Painless before on my 1970 Bronco. It's just that they are way too proud of their $hit now. If I'm gonna spend that much money, I'll add a few more bucks and go with Centech Wiring. 10X the quality of Painless. I used Centech on my 1981 CJ-5.

I have done several Painless kits, and they are very nice, but they are also almost double the cost of the E-Z kits. If I wanted to spend that much money, I can manually wire it myself with better quality wire and completely custom switches, it would just take more time. The E-Z kits will work for what I need, although I have another project in the pipe that will most likely get a Painless kit.

I used an Ez Wiring kit and I love it. Yes it required more time and work to install but it is worth it in the end as you have a harness 100% suited to your needs and your vehicle. The wires are labeled every 6"-8" and there isn't a wire smaller than 14 gauge, oh Did I mention it's still less the half the price?

yep its back from the dead. :zombie18:

did the ez kit bolt directly to factory dash/firewall hole ?

and was it setup for wipers on dash or steering ?

did it plug in to the factory dash gauge cluster ? or you reuse some of that ?

Here is a reply I made about the kits on another board. I would definatelty go with EZ wiring over the other 2 I installed in a heartbeat. Keep in mind these kits were all installed on 67-72 chevy trucks.

I have installed 3 different wiring harnesses in my trucks so far. A painless, ez wire, and a summit brand one.

I personally think the painless is overpriced and the only thing you gain is the firewall bulkhead is 3 piece like the factory one. I really like the EZ wire one I installed in the 67, it is like the Summit one and does not have a bulkhead connector and gives a cleaner install. I filled in the factory hole for the fuseblock and then drilled a 1" hole in its place with a bushing for all the engine compartment wires to pass through.

The bad thing is if I wanted to pull the front clip, you would have to unplug all the connectors. I dont really like the summit one since I got the one with the mini fuses and the diagram of what fuses are where is on the lid, a real pain when I accidently mis-placed it.

All of them have labeling on the wires every foot, and were pretty much identical other than the fuseblock unbolting on the painless.

All were made with quality wire.
Dont think that the painless is a plug and play like I originally thought. It is just like the other 3 brands I installed, they leave all the wires long and all have to be trimmed down to fit exact. All light sockets have to be installed, I think all that comes with them is the headlight pigtails and the headlight switch pigtail. All the ignition, gauges, heater, side marker, turn signal, tailight sockets and other misc connectors off the original harness have to be used.

Just dont throw out your factory harness until you have 100% installed your new one, you have to re-use the heater wiring, wipers and some misc. I soldered all connections and heat-shrinked them. If I were to install another on I would go with the EZwire as it is a little under $200 vs the $500 for a painless.

The kit comes with the GM collumn plug and a set of headlight plugs. Thats it. Everything else comes off of your factory harness. I got a bunch of weather proof butt connectors and spade connectors (the kind with the heat shrink pre-installed) for extra connections and easy disconnectability for certain components.
