So im ordering my rebuilt nv4500 and i can have either early or late model for the same price. Both will come fully syncronized and with bell housing. Both should shift the same because they rebuild both with late model top cover. So in my mind i would prefer the early model for external slave. Will i have clearance issues not sure how much lift i have it came with lift in it. I would hope i have enough lift to run external slave? Its a 1990 suburban with swapped dana 60 front and its on 37in tires with very minimal trimming. So it has some lift. So what would you do early or late model? Fast answers appreciated i told them early model but can still change it if i know soon.

If clearing 37" tires no real trimming your fine . If me i would go early for external slave and tad lower 1st gear .

Nice there using newer 4 bolt shifter top . If you need one i have the tower and handle from a dodge 4500 . It needs a new home .

Thanks for the quick responses i was all set to order the late model and live with the internal slave for the fully syncronized in all gears and better shifting of the late models then he threw me for a loop when he said that when he rebuilds them the are pretty much exactly the same since he uses late model top shifter plate on all and syncronizes all gears including reverse on all that he rebuilds so according to him other than the bellhousing using internal or external they were the same. He did not mention lower first gear but i already knew that and would actually prefer the lower first for off road anyway. And would prefer the external slave for easier maint if the salve failed on the trail middle of no where i would definently prefer external. So i said early model. Then i was worried if i would have clearance issues. Thanks for the quick responses you guys are great.

Already bought the tower and handle sorry

I chose the advance adapters bellhousing to maintain the oem square body slave style.
The clearance issue is really only a problem on stock trucks. If its just a cruiser and doesnt flex, it might never touch. But it sure is close.
Even marginally lifted will help.

Anyone have a pic of where the early modle nv4500 slave sits in a square body? Im just trying to picture it so i can look at my setup and see how much space i have. Also is it true the that all of the gear ratios are diffrent between the early and late model nv4500 i only ask because thats what grimjeeper's gear ratio calculator page says. I called my builder and he put it on hold till tomorrow so i can make a final decision he was very cool about it. If i cant figure out the potential clearance issue for sure i may just go late model with internal slave. External is easier to replace but i dont want to chance it not fitting right. Also a good internal slave should last a long time my dd cobalt has 258,000 miles on the original slave and clutch with no issues.

If you're willing to drill & tap 4 holes, a stock square-body SM465 bell housing fits the early-style NV4500 quite nicely. Have the best of both worlds! :waytogo:

Looks nicely done. Im going from auto to manual though so i did not have either bell to start with. I ended up going late model with bellhousing. Thanks for the reply though

Thanks! I wish I had taken decent pictures of how it fit together.

I didn't have that bell housing, either. I bought it to simplify the auto --> manual swap.

With the late model bell, just grab a slave cylinder for your year of tranny and it will work with stock squarebody hydraulics once you splice the two hydraulic lines together. You might be able to use the GTO slave cylinder and skip the hydraulic splicing. But do some research. They look interchangeable, and I used one for my NV3500. But the devil is in the details.

Thanks. ZOOMAD75 gave me the run down. I have an luk master and slave cylinder coming with earl hose and fittings to adapt. All my parts should be here within a week or 2 then the fun begins. I think i have it all and when im done if all goes smoothly i figure i will post a complete parts list for the next guy who needs info.
