So Ya I could search for hours but I'm lazy. Somebody must have an easy way to get the steering gear box end cap out? I already got the retainer snap ring. Was thinking about welding something to the cap so I can pull it out or do I have to take the whole box off the truck?

I wonder if you put air pressure in the fluid port and force it out? Kinda like you do when you rebuild calipers. But I'm interested in what you find works because I got to rebuild my box in the next few weeks.

Iirc, turning the steering wheel a little was how I got mine out. Just a little at a time and the cap started to push out. Once it moved a little I stuck a skinny punch thru the snap ring hole and bump it out.

Did you have the motor running with lines hooked up when you turned wheel? and let pressure push it out? I don't have lines made up yet I'm in the process of hooking up Hydro assist.

Lines were hooked up but I can't remember if it was running. I'm thinking probably not.

Iirc, too much pressure and the cap can come off AND the box can spill some parts.

The round cylinder that toothes to the sector shaft (part your pitman arm connects to) is what is right behind that cap. And do not have it running when you do that, it will blow that cap out and spray fluid everywhere. Engine off, and turn it to full lock (cant remember which direction) until it starts slowly pushing cap, then pick it out.

I had the truck off, and turned side to side very slowly. It eventually worked right out, no spilled parts.

Worked great just had to pull pitman arm off to be able to turn it far enough. Now next problem. So I needed to take the top cap off the sector shaft so I can drill and tap it for hydro assist. I figured just take the 4 bolts out of the cap and the lock nut on the adjustment stud and I could get the cap off. I even read up on it some and counted the amount of turns it took to get the nut off so I could put it back on the same. Here is the problem I'm not sure if I did it or if it was already cracked but the Allen adjuster is cracked see pictures. So can I just take the whole shaft and gear assembly out of another gear box? Maybe my old 4wd box? The other picture is of the one out of a 4wd. Not sure if 2wd and 4wd sector shafts are the same? I havent taken the shaft out of the 2wd on truck yet. I don't see how to take the adjuster screw out if the shaft? Any advice?

The adjuster screw will never come out. It has a ball end to it. It gets its adjustment from the steering cap. So that means youll need a new sector shaft.

I made a special tool to get the ring off the box end cap...thought about trying to sell them since it worked so well.

The 2wd and 4wd sector shafts are the same other than the pitman arm notches. 2wd sector shafts allow the pitman to be clocked, which is why people gravitate towards them for crossover steering.

I took my cap off by unloading the sector shaft and spinning the cap on the sector shaft adjustment screw. I counted my turns as well and ended up right where I left off. Keep in mind its ok to leave the sector shaft screw on the looser side of adjustment if you get lost in your turns, start the truck and adjust it to where it needs to be. If it ends up too tight it could break the cap or mangle something else.

Oh and the fastest way to get steering fluid filled is to have the truck on jack stands, turn to the passenger side, fill up your steering pump and slowly turn to the driver side without sucking the reservoir dry. Basically the hydraulic ram is compressed and then you pull fluid in when it extends.

Thats right I forgot about the spline orientation. I guess I'm looking for another 2wheel Gbox again

I was going to do the sector swap but I found rock auto to have a no name steering box for $50. Basically the mfg made too many so it didnt get a cardone sticker on it.

Was that recently? Might have to check it out. I paid $60.00 for the junkyard one that I have now.
