Easter Run March 21-23....Wellsville Ohio.

Hey Jerry, I haven't checked the board for a while. Lambert stopped by yesterday. He is going to arrive Friday, likely in the afternoon. His wife isn't going, so I get free room & board. :D Supposed to be in the 40's, and his camper sounds like a better place to sleep than a tent. I was assuming that we were going to camp at Oaktree, but he said he was pretty sure it was at a different campsite....Austin Lake or something like that????

Let me know where you guys are going to be....an address would be best so I can map it.

The pile of Ford is already loaded onto the trailer & ready to go. I'll drive the truck-trailer-Buford to work on Friday, and head to Wellsville around 4:00-4:30 pm. I should be arriving somewhere around 6:30 pm.

I am assuming the actual club is renting out that other campgrounds again for the weekend (where we stayed at several years ago), but since I don't believe JK5's truck is street legal anymore I wouldn't be surprised if they are just staying at Oaktree.

That's what I was thinking when I asked Lambert yesterday: "Is it the place we camped on my first trip to Wellsville in 2004?" He said that it was a different place than that, and it was not Oaktree....so I don't know where it is.

Brad is right...Oaktree.

Austin Lake is too far away...I want to lead a night run...Oaktree just makes more sense. I'll probably get to Oaktree around 11 am friday.:wink1:

That's cool Jerry....I'd personally rather stay at Oaktree simply because it is at the trail head, it's easy to find, and I've been there several times. I called Lambert, and he was under the impression that most people were staying "at the lake." He said he would call Brian later tonight & find out where they are staying.

Other than you and I, who else is staying at Oaktree?

Thanks,
Roy

Me and Lappy for sure.

Jim, Rich and Brad....saturday for sure.
I'm not really sure who's camping at Oaktree...time will tell.

Brian....and the other Jeepers will probably be at Austin Lake and Yellow Creek.
Brian's rig isn't finished....he may not go.

Jerry: I talked to Mike today. He confirmed that Brian is not going. Mike would camp at Oaktree if he can get the lone "electric spot" at Oaktree. He is able to heat his camper with propane, but with the price of fuel, etc, he wants to use the electric....I don't blame him. He said that he will likely arrive around 1:00 pm-ish on Friday. He will be in his Chevy dually 4x4/camper, not the motorhome, so he should be able to park it OK, even if it is wet....and I'm sure it will be. I told him that I'd ask if you (or anyone else in your group) arrived before that time, to park a rig in the "electrical outlet spot".....if possible....until he gets there.

I'll be there either way, but hopefully someone can snag that spot for Mike....and I will have heated room & board vs. sleeping in the tow rig. :wink1:

My "trip report" from this ride...notice I did not say "trail report" :( This was written Friday night from my house....not Wellsville:

A week ago, I bought a "new to me" truck from another state to tow with for a while, before I sell it. I have put over 500 miles on it since I bought it. It has roughly 89,000 miles on it. I towed Buford to work today...towed fine. I left work around 4:15 pm today. Cruising along at 70-75 mph on I-70, everything was in order....the bed was loaded with Buford spares, 48 cans of beer on ice, food, etc. Then the serpentine belt broke.

Lambert happened to call just as I was pulling into the breakdown lane on I-70, roughly 10 miles east of the Barkcamp area. I knew the belt had broke because I lost power steering, and heard "chirp, squeak, chirp, silence." I told Lambert I’d have to call him back.

I unloaded Buford with 8 psi front, 4 psi rear in the tires, and had the privilege of merging into 70 mph traffic from a dead stop. (I was behind the trailer & tow rig). The ride was rough until the flat spotted TSL’s started to get round again. At the next exit, I found an Autozone. I planned to buy two serpentine belts, one for now, and a spare to prevent this from ever happening again, along with a tensioner pulley...whether I needed it or not, I now wanted to have a spare one of those too....to prevent this from ever happening again.

Autozone did not have a belt for the vehicle. WTF? I advised I was not from the area, and asked if there were any other parts stores that may have a belt. It was after 5:00 pm, so Napa would be closed. He let me call Advance Auto, which he said was 5 miles away. They advised that they did not stock them either. I’m not driving a one-off uber rare rig...it is a Dodge truck.

I drove Buford back to the disabled Dodge. I called AAA. After a brief discussion, I talked to "Bill’s Towing." The guy seemed cool and understood my dilemma: One 7000 lb. + (bed was full) truck pulling a 2500 lb. Trailer, with a 5500 + pound vehicle on top of it. He stated he could put the Dodge on a roll-back, and tow the trailer behind the rollback, but he would never make it out of a weigh station with another truck on the trailer. I understood his point.

The plan: Leave the Dodge & trailer beside the interstate, head out soon in Buford, and they would pick up the truck & trailer within the hour. I unlocked the trailer hitch-lock, told him the Dodge key would be in the ashtray, and got ready to head home in Buford. I made sure I had my registration & insurance card in my notebook, as I expected to be pulled over at least once on the 80 mile trip home.

I had to once again drive in the opposite direction of home, get off I70, get back on I70, and headed west. I stopped at the nearest exit. I filled up Buford’s tank, aired all four tires up to 22 psi, left the drive flanges in, asked a Deputy Sheriff at the gas station if there were any roads that had a 55 mph speed limit that would get me to the Cambridge area (I was kinda wanting to stay off the interstate). He advised that there weren’t any roads like that until the 186 exit (RT 40) in Guernsey County. I was somewhere around the 215 exit. He said, "That thing has got to use a lot of gas." I advised that I did not care about the gas, I was bummed that my weekend had been ruined by a $35 serpentine belt.

After I aired up the tires, I was fairly surprised that the tail lights worked. Tail lights, head lights, and brake lights worked, turn signals did not. I hit the interstate, got behind a Semi with blue writing on the back end, and followed it, not passing anyone, and not holding up traffic for the next 60 miles or so. Situations like this make me thankful for checking all of Buford’s innards on a regular basis....last weekend I replaced all four front wheel bearings, a rear U-joint cap, greased everything, & much more that isn’t worth talking about at this time.

I arrived home around 8:00 pm, without incident, passing one State Trooper and one Deputy Sheriff...neither of which seemed concerned with my mode of transportation. The tow vehicle and trailer arrived around 9:30 pm. Tow truck guy had to unload the trailer 50' or so from the end of my driveway as it (rollback w/ 18' trailer) was too long to make the turn back to the house.

He backed into the driveway. I backed the Dodge off of the rollback, and parked it in the garage. I paid the tow truck driver $237 & change for the "trailer tow." Tow truck guy said he was "glad I had tools, or he wouldn’t have been able to unhook the hitch." Nice of him to rifle through my junk, but I wasn’t really concerned with that. Dude failed to mention that he helped himself to a pack of my cigarettes as well. I did not realize this until he had left. That pissed me off quite a bit more than the tow bill, digging through my tools, etc. I’m 100% sure that I had four unopened packs of Pall Mall Lights in the driver door pocket. I grabbed one of them for the trip home, which left three. When I opened the passenger side door of the truck after tow truck dude left, there were only two packs left. It’s not the $3.50 price, and yes, I should stop smoking. It is simply the idea of it.

Anyway, after tow truck guy left, I had Valerie drive the F150 to the end of the driveway (I had consumed three light beers...yeah, I could barely walk after three Natty Light’s), I "spotted" her backing the F150 up to the trailer that was parked within sight of the driveway. I hooked it up (she did a good job getting the truck to the trailer...not joking). She made it into the driveway, and I took over, wiggling the Ford/trailer a bit to make it fit through the entrance. After I parked everything, I noted that the F150 looks rather comical....like it is used for a work truck. It still has the nearly 900 lbs of weight in the bed from the snow storm/auto hub failure/I need to make it home/prior to manual hub installation adventure from two weeks ago....plus the trailer tongue weight on the rear bumper hitch.

Summary: One weekend’s wheeling trip ruined, a buddy (Mike) sitting at the sheety OakTree campsite without my beer guzzling arse BS-ing with him, 48 cans of beer now sitting alone & unloved on ice in the garage, a stolen pack of smokes, etc. In the overall scheme of things, I seriously doubt that the events of this day will play a significant role in my existence. When "bad things" happen, I’ve learned to look at it with the thought of: "In a week/month/year, will you really care that this happened?" That helps separate the annoyances in life from serious issues.

With that said, it still sucks....all because of a $35 serpentine belt.

And the Monday morning update:

I called everywhere Saturday AM...no one had a serpentine belt in stock, including two Dodge dealers in the area. Advance auto ordered one around noon, and they had it by 4:00 pm on Saturday...first time I've ordered a part & had it arrive the same day.

When I went to install the new belt, I found the culprit that caused the belt failure (belt was gone, I lost it on I-70). It was a bad idler pulley...the bearing was gone, and the pulley was able to "flop around." I had an extra idler pulley in the garage that was the same diameter. It works on the engine, but it isn't exactly right...not quite wide enough to contact all of the belt. It was good enough to move the truck around at the house...no plans to drive it with it on there.

The engine has two idler pulleys + the tensioner. Dealers don't stock the idler pulley either. I'm ordering two OEM idler pulley's today @ $24 each, two new OEM idler pulley bolts @ $1.35 each, and I'm ordering another new OEM belt (for a spare) @ $32 from the dealer. I already bought a new tensioner pulley for $25 at the parts store, so when the stuff comes in tomorrow, I will have a new "everything" and a spare "everything" for the serpentine belt system on the vehicle....have I mentioned that I'd prefer not to waste another weekend due to something like this?

Jerry: I talked to Mike Saturday evening on his cell phone...when you were playing on the Chicken Coupe trail....he said that the ride to that point was drama free, other than a rig with a broken spring.

Sucks I couldn't make it...........

Roy....that's one hell of a trip report...
Too bad Auto Zone didn't have the belt.:doah:

I didn't get to Oak Tree until 9:30 am saturday morning. We waited until 10:15 then hit the trail. Lappy brought his bike, so we covered alot of ground in a very short time. Around 11:30, we finally found Mike Lambert and the guys that camped at Yellow Creek down in the rock garden. There was 3 Jeeps, 2 Zuk's, a Bronco, a Cherokee, a couple bikes and my rig...

Mike Lambert led the group for most of the run, hitting some tite trails, sure I was yawning, but it was better than sitting at home. We hit a trail not far from the Chinese Waterfall, one of the zuks snapped a front spring, it took over a hour to repair, it didn't help having the rig on a mud covered hill during repairs.

Then we went down to Chicken, played on the rocks, then went after the hills. I took on the most difficult line on the left hand side, I bounced around at the top, but made it with not much effort. Chicken woke me up, by that time it was 6:00 and the guys decided to call it a day. We took our time loading the rig on to the trailer. Left at 7:30, and was home by 9:30.

Considering the cold temps, snow chased most of the guys away, we had a good run, I definately had a blast. :D

Make sure you get a spare belt for that Dodge.:wink1:

Good report Jerry. Regarding the spare belt....you must have missed this from my previous post:

Jerry:

A woman I work with just arrived at the office, and shared a little story. Last Friday, some of her friends were going to a Larry The Cable Guy event in West Va. On the way there, they happened to observe an odd looking vehicle on the interstate. They took a picture of the front & rear of the odd looking vehicle. Maria (woman from work) instantly regognized it....the people who took the pictures had it on a myspace page. I'm not into myspace, but she said you had to be a "friend" to see it. She emailed me the pictures. Enjoy.

Thanks...I'm going to have stop speed reading..:doah:
having no plates had to make you nervous..

I see Buford lost some weight.:D

Buford is registered and insured. The license plate is under the center of the rear sliding window...just couldn't see it from the angle of the picture.

This shows where it is:

My birthday was a couple weeks ago, and I made sure to have all of my new registrations, insurance cards, etc with me. I put my "expires March 2009" little sticker on it right before I backed it off the trailer. :wink1:

ok...your gas can was blocking my view of the plate.

Hopefully Rodney puts up some pics from the run on the tt site...:wink1:

Brad came by my desk on Thursday and asked me if I wanted to ride with him but with recent deaths in Kristen's family I wasn't able to. I told him to let me know next time and I'll try to make it. :)

Brad was my passenger on Chicken...it looks pretty flat by looking at the pics.
