From what I understand, is if you have the auto hubs with the 3 cover bolts then you DO need a conversion kit. If you don't have those hubs then you Don't.
Harley is correct - I just checked in the Warn catalog - if you have the 3 hole hubs then you would need the conversion kit. Otherwise, you just swap the stock auto hubs for aftermarket versions...
I appreciate the info. My buddy swore up and down that I needed a conversion kit but I also was "pretty sure" that it was a straight swap! I have the 5-hole autos.
