easy oil pump ? (puttin it on)

hello all!
Ok, I think this should be easy. When I dropped the oil pump on the rig, there was a gasket between the pump and the rear cap. (This motor was short blocked at a machine shop.)
I get a new pump and notice it has no gasket. I ask the parts fellow about a gasket and he says that chevy's do not, nor ever have use a gasket for mounting the pump.
What gives?

There isn't supposed to be a gasket there. Check the pump and the rear main cap mating surfaces though for any damage. If there is damage or they don't sit well on eachother, there will be a leak. If this is the case, maybe the shop made a gasket to put in there so it doesn't leak. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
