how do the non desiel people like me know what code motor we have. thanks. its in a 85 k-10 sbc step side with the car 4 speed 208 setup. yukky.

This confuses afro. If you are asking about a 6.2, the C-codes are found in half tons and have a big gold cylinder in the middle of the intake hole, this is the EGR valve. J-codes have nothing like this, they are just wide open.
 
Ahemmmm... This from the official GM "Shop Manual"

he "C" code vs. "J" code designation is the eighth digit in the in the vehicle identification number...

For you non-doesel types...the 5.7 L gas motor will have code "L", "M" or "P" depending on variations of carb etc. The 7.4 liter (454) gas motor is a "W".
