Easy way to pull an XJ shaft from an XJ Cherokee?

are guys using XJ drivelines on full size GMs now? ive never seen one but arent then kinda small?

pull the pinch bolt on each end 13mm if i recall. socket and long extension and long handle ratchet.

then pull the 3 bolts that hold the steering box to the unibody frame.

take pry bar and walk the shaft off the splines on each end.

then flex test the joints. 1/2 of the ones i have ever pulled were on there way out. half frozen u-joints. and you need to pull the shaft to do a good test. so all the work for possible bad just so ya know.

If its a junkyard XJ, just take the bolts loose from the bottom of shaft at steering box and at the top by the column inside the engine compartment and then go inside and undo the 3-4bolts holding the column up. Put your feet up on the dash, grab steering wheel and PULL!!!!!!!!!! Viola!!! One steering shaft with the center plastic still intact. Should take no more than 5-10 minutes.

Now getting it on the K5 without disturbing the plastic insert is more of a challenge and for that, your on your own. I just drilled mine out and collapsed it.

The XJ shaft mod is one of thee BEST mods you can do for a K5.

When you are trying to get the ends off, if you spread the pinch bolt area apart much at all it will make the joint start to stick. Not saying that's what you did, but it will cause the problem.

thats why i said walk the shaft off.

but your info applys to all u-joint systems. got to wack the yoke ends when done to releve the stress from flexing when installing new u-joints or thay will bind.

and up here in the rust belt the joints go bad in the jeep shafts. go to flex them and its stiff as hell 1 way and chunky also. = toast joint.
