Hey my friend was saying that in 67-72 one-ton chevy that there was a rear axel made by eaton.it had a drop-out third member.he also said that this is a industructible axle.does anyone know if this is true.

thanks

Very true, and harder to get parts for these days. This was used in 3/4 ton trucks/Burbs as well.

I believe there was also a HO72, and a 110??? Chevy started using this axle in the late 40s, and didn't replace it till the 70s.

yea its a strong axle, iirc it has a 10.5" ring gear, can be shaved to have the clearance of a d44 or something crazy like that and quite a few internals from a 14ff can be used in it. search and you can find out what you want to know about them

The Eaton HO52(3/4t) and the HO72(1t/bigger brakes) were in GM trucks through`72,then the 14-bolt replaced it.All the GM Corporate axles/non-Dana (12-bolts,etc.) are Eaton. The HO52s didn`t need shaved. They offer excellent clearance from their plain round design.I find parts at Napa, they are fairly expensive.Lockers from 14-bolts swap-in with 14-bolt axles(spline count),but the axles need a bit cut off the inner end.The factory offered a "No-Spin" option which was plain`n`simple a Detroit Locker. In the last years(67-72)these axles were found mostly under Chevys with GMCs using Dana60 rears. They`re a badass axle that stands the test of time. The drop-out makes them great. You can score a No-Spin unit (they`re out there) and pop it in.I have found 3 lockers in the past year

I've got a factory Eaton axle under the back of my '72 Burb....

Didnt most have 10 spline axles though? Seams theres a gleaming weak point of the eatons but i cant remember for sure.

Axle axle axle.

From what I understand, you can swap in a 14ff carrier to get the 14ff 30 spline alxes. Most come with 4.56's or 5.14's. If you don't go the 14ff carrier route, you need to find one with a no spin (detroit locker) in it, as they are no longer available new.

You can also mount disc brakes on these rears, too, from what I understand. The bracket holes share the same square pattern and distance to each hole, too.

They have 17 spline shafts. I don't know if the actual carrier will swap, but I did take the Detroit out of my 14 bolt and it looks very similar to the Eaton's Detroit, they fit in each other's place. The ring gear on the Eaton isn't quite 10.5 inches, more like 10.25 or less.

Here is a pic of mine, it was under a '65 C20 so that's why it has a trac bar and trailing arm mounts under the axletubes vs. leaf perches on top. That truck came from the factory with 4.57 gears and a No-Spin (Detroit). I got a 3rd with 5.14's from a motorhome that I'm gonna use.

The way I heard you can make a Detroit from a 14FF work in the Eaton is by swapping out the 30 spline shafts to fit the Eaton.
