All of this is for a 96 Chevy 4x4. Was the 4L80E controlled the ECM or a TCU? If it was the ECM what all is need to swap in a 4L80E in place of a 4L60E? Is there any rewiring to be done? Where is the Vss suppose to be placed?

Welcome Aboard!

I don't know much about the new trannys but I believe there is a difference in controllers from diesel to gassers so keep that in mind. As in I *think* the gasser equiped 4L80E trucks use an integrated controller but diesel equipped trucks with the 4L80E use a stand alone controller...

Diesel up to X year used a TCU. When the diesels got electronics, they got a PCM as well as I understand it. At least in '91 GM called it a PCM for gassers. From what I've seen, ECM/PCM whatever was different for 4L60E/4L80E, but later (mid-late 90's) GM may have started using the same PCM for both trannies.

VSS is either in the tailhousing of a 2wd 4L80E, or of the transfercase if 4wd.

As dyeager says. Bowtie performance maybe a good source of info.

And ermm.....you may want to change your avatar :)

There are some minor wiring differences between a 80 and a 60. The PCM I believe will work but will need to be reprogrammed .
Why are you changing? there are enough good parts for a 4l60 to make them last in most applications for less money than changing to a different trans.

Reason

The reason is that i have fried 2 4l60es. Just want to have piece of mind as well.

Thanks

Tim

Lets get some specs on the truck... ok so its a '96 chevy... standard cab, extended cab, crew cab, short bed, long bed, any lift, what size wheels/tires, and especially what gears...
