It's much higher pressure than that, >3000 psi, at 100 psi you would need over 60 bottles of air instead of 2, even with that the bottles are larger than nitrous, and you need two of them. That's because air is only around 20% oxygen, mostly nitrogen. Whereas nitrous oxide, N20 is 2 atoms of nitrogen to 1 atom of oxygen. But the molecular weight of nitrogen is 14 and oxygen is 16, so 16/(16+(2x14))= 36.4% oxygen by mass, so nearly double.

It's been around a long time and is a good idea, but because you need such large bottles, and more of them, and still have to have it filled at such high pressures, it's not as common as nitrous oxide injection.

Its crazy how much air an engine consumes when you start doing the math in lbs of air, you convert that to cubic feet or gallons, and it gets real big real fast.

One of the benefits of nitrous oxide injection is when the liquid nitrous exits the nozzle into the warm intake, it drops to 120 below zero F, and then it seperates into pure oxygen in the combustion chamber. This makes a cold mixture with a lot of pure oxygen, but the tradeoff is it also requires very good fuel, you can only add around 100 HP or so of nitrous with pump gasoline. I'm adding nearly 200 HP, but I am pushing it very carefully.

So theoretically with this compressed air, you could add more, more similar to boost numbers, while still using pump gas.
