Ok so I decided to dump my little original tbi 350 and swap in my tbi 454. I have the complete donor truck too! My questions is what's my best bet for the ECU? Stock ECU with custom PROM or newer stock unit?

The truck is a 91' burb with a 350 & a 4l80e/241. I will be keeping the the tranny and thought to even go carbed for simplicity and run a compushift controller for the tranny. I think this idea might lead to problems with dash instruments, i.e. speedo etc. not working.

Anyone have any thoughts that could help me choose the best path?

BTW - THIS SITE KICKS A** THANKS YA'LL

what service #'s are on your ecu's ?

7747 last 4 prob on the 350 unit.

whats the 454 one got ?

and lots of them are just plug and play.

but custom chip s easy and cheeper than carb / controler by far. and you will get less performance / reliable / throttle responce from the carb swap i think.

I'm not sure what the #'s are. I'm outa town alot for work and right now I'm trying to do the research end before I go home. I will look at these when I get a chance though and let you know.
I think the carb will be fine with the issues you've listed. The only advantage IMO is that the computer will adjust for altitude where a carb is a pain to jet. My preferrence is TBI for simplicity sake but I'm also not a computer person. I'm worried I'll be over my head soon with the efi.
I am hoping I can just buy a new ECU from say a 92' 454 w/a 4l80e. I don't know if GM made a 4x4's with this combo though.

Ok are you swapping in motors? are you just swapping the tbi? If you're swapping motors then you just need your chip in your computer re-burned and you're good to go. If it's just the tbi unit then you're just good to go as is. Reburning will be the best way and no reason to swap computers and do anything funny. The 91 was specific to that year so the 7747 wont work as they don't control the 4l80e as well.

Reburn and it will be a simple process for you.

Gotcha & yes I'm swapping engines. I am using the tbi original for the 454 in place of the 350 unit. I read somewhere that I have an extra wire to contend with though. Thanks for the input. I wanta make some progress when I go home. I guess I should pull the 91's ECU out and send the prom for a recal right? Sounds better than swapping my hole set-up to carb.

You probably have the 16147060 PCM (not an ECU). Keep that one as it is the same for the 350 or 454 and controlls the 4L80e. You will need a new chip however.
Will your 454 remain fairly stock?
The 16147060 was not specific to 1991 as far as I know, I think that it was used through 1995.

The 454 will be stock. Its real low miles and I'm thinking its just a waste of money to do again to it. I think I will go through tbichips.com for the chip. Unless I'm missing anything I think this hole swap will be real straight forward and sweet.
I'm not sure what to do with the tbi if every want to build the motor up. A friend of mine @ FSR Motorsports (the owner) has a 2wd burb with og 4l80E and 454. He went to a 496 and tried a few tbi fueling options to no avail. He eventually went carb and independant tranny cont. After looking at what he went through I think my choices are very limited if I want to remain with hassle free, trail freindly tbi.
Suggestions welcome
