trucks gonna have a 350 bored .40, stock heads, stock igniton, edelbrock performer intake, comp cams extreme 4x4 cam, and lifters. truck will see mild off road use mostly highway and city. out of the two carbs which one would be the best bet for making the most power but also not crushing my funds. i know the avs is more expensive but if the pro's of it aint a lot better for the price than the performer series than is it worth the money?

Why no other options? I am pretty sure I will never own another edelbrock carb ever again. Holley Avenger maybe?

I have the same setup, stock bore though, 210 intake, 218 exhaust xtreme cam, performer intake, performer carb w/ electric choke(was on the truck when i bought it). When i bought the truck, it had numerous broken valve springs and some bent valves. That's when i decided on the comp cams extreme, runs great. If i had chosen the carb though, i'd probably had gone with manual choke. You can find them on craigslist and what not for 50 bucks, rebuild kit=40bucks, <100 bucks and you got yourself a carb.

I suggest a Quadrajet. Cheap at the wreckers, plentiful and rebuild is easy. I've gotten them for $20 at the wrecker, rebuild kits under $50. Much better IMHO.

Go with the Edelbrock AVS offroad. They are a fairly new carb based on the old carter AVS carb.
Like a Q-Jet.They are a spread bore design with an adjustable air valve on the secondaries. So should give better gas MPG.+ Great performance
They come with the spring loaded needle and seats which is needed for offroad use.
More and easily tunable than the basic performer series or Holley TA carbs.
They are about the closest carb to a Q-Jet that you can buy.

because i have had edelbrock on the truck for a long time and i know how to work on it pretty good. i have a 1406 on there right now but its been rebuilt twice and i belive is crack because i have fuel leak on the driver side that i cant pin point. either way im going brand new i just didnt know if for what im gonna use it for is the extra 100 worth the offroad carb?

Holley

It's all a matter of what you're familiar with. As long as you can really tune a carburetor it will run great within it's design limitations. I'm comfortable with Holley carburetors and have made most run nearly as well as a TA on inclines with some select modifications. The idle feeds, and primary main/pvcr can stand some tuning as well but that usually takes a methodical approach and effort.

Don't forget the ignition! Put on a MSD 6A(L) box, coil, and wires. You will wake up that engine. Before I rebuilt my 350 I installed the MSD kit. The engine had 140,000 miles was hard to start and not very responsive. After instillation much faster starts and better overall engine response. After rebuild with different intake, cam, Heads, and exhaust have to keep BOTH hands on steering wheel to control truck ( 300 - 330 HP ).
Bottom line you need a strong spark to burn that fuel under all loads.

I have that same leak on my 1406 carb. I honestly think it is a crack somewhere in the body of the carb as it only leaks when the engine is running. Anyway the AVS is basically just 1406 with an extra "fuel in" port, spring loaded seats, and vacuum rather than mechanical secondaries. You will still get the edelbrock poor off camber runability and self de-tuning that is typical to them. I would say get a stock q-jet and rebuild it, tune it, and love it. I wish I would've kept my original one.

The 600cfm Performer isn't worth crap on a truck that'll see even light or moderate wheeling.. worked good on the street, just wouldn't want to run on inclines. There is nothing quite like having to bump the starter over to get some braking power to back down a hill

What Thunder is saying about the Offroad AVS sounds interesting...

I ended up with an I-5 Auto Q-jet and with very little tuning it works great. I put the truck up a couple of steep inclines that I never could have before..

basically the same carb. i have a the edelbrock 1400 smog legal carb on my blazer and have never had any issues whatsoever with it on or offroad. a quadrajet properly setup is a great choice as well.

I have problems with my Edelbrock 1406 just going down bumpy dirt roads so i would not recommend it at all for off road use. I even installed the off road needle and seat kit and it didn't make much of a difference.

I also have a ele-CRAP on my mildly built 350, vortec heads, offroaad cam.... inclines the thing spits.... spudders..... you have to pin the pedal to the floor ad hope you make it until you hit 100% flat ground.... give it a few seconds to clean out.... JUNK!!!

I've loved my carter/edelbrocks for years, still do. mine worked great on the street and light wheeling. never had a problem till i was following pauley383 up a really steep hill and he stopped to take another line and all of a sudden i thought i had top fueler. scared the heck out of every one in my truck. i've used them all. quaderjunks always go in my trash, holleys go on race cars, my street cars have edelbrocks/ carters. just my opinion:D O my current truck is tbi, I will never wheel with a carb again!:doah:

Ive had a few edelbrock carbs on my truck and for the most part they were decent carbs on the highway

I tried an avs series when they came out and it worked good on the street. got decent mileage and always started and ran good but even with the spring loaded needles and seats it sucked off road.

I paid $50 for a q-jet from a member here and put it in the place of the $300 avs and it works exactly the same on the highway but will still run with the truck almost laying on its side where as the avs would start flooding the engine when I flexed my truck on a 2x4 in the driveway.

i had the edelbrock 600 on my 1st shortbed and it was old but never let me down for 5 years, i bought another( the one for sale in the parts section) and would still be using it if my motor wouldnt have so much work done to it...that ones a year ols and worked great.
