So I have an 84 k5 with a rebuilt 350 and 700R4 from the PO. Nothing crazy, just a typical rebuild, headers, gear drive, very conservative cam, Edelbrock performer RPM with a Carter carb. It runs great and I dont have a problem with it at all. I was just wondering if it would make much of a difference if I put a regular Edelbrock performer and an Edelbrock 650 carb (all of which I have in my garage). Most, if not all my driving takes place under 3000rpm's. The RPM is for 1500-6500 rpm's. Just seems a bit over kill to me. Any thoughts??

Ive got the performer rpm on my 408 with a summit 1103 cam http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-1103/

I was told it was a great intake for my application, but it may be a bit much for yours from what you say about the motor. The PO of mine had my intake on the 305 that was in it and I was told I should have def changed it, but I just got a new motor so I kept it. Id get the performer, check for a used one I would say, no need to spend big bucks on somehting you can clean up pretty easily

I was thinkning it wouldnt hurt. Especially since it will just cost me a little bit of time and a couple new gaskets. The old saying if it aint broke dont fix it comes in to play with this.

True, but its not something that should really screw up anything as long as you get any debris blown and cleaned off the top of the motor so it cant get in when you remove the old one. And then just clean up the RPM and slap it on CL and you may only spend $$ on the gaskets. Go felpro blue gaskets.

if it runs like it should and doesn’t leak... leave it alone. Change those parts and you might find yourself posing a new thread titled “Urgent HELP needed” Sell that other stuff…

Go felpro blue gaskets.

If you are talking about Felpro 1204's (almost all blue) they are recommended for a cast iron intake only. Felpro 1205's (dark gray with a blue ring around the ports) are the ones recommended for an aluminum intake.

and I do agree with if it isn't broken............

no even down low a performer rpm will make more power.......leave what you have. If you want more performance put on a holley carb and dump that other stuff

Probably right. Should just leave it as it is and put on a different carb. Murphy always plays a part in everything I do. I even donated $2 to the Salvation Army tonight in hopes to get some good karma built up.

Just keep your feet and knee's together and you will be fine.:doah:

Just to add to this..What does the majority say on an Edelbrock AIRGAP manifold?

I agree. Don't start tinkering unless you can devote time and money to the 'domino effect' that comes with little upgrades 90% of the time.

Yes, it will make less power, pretty much in the entire RPM band without gaining anything. The RPM manifold is a better manifold in every aspect except hood clearance, which isn't an issue for us.

Scottishdave, Always have and always will!!

Looking like I might go with a Holley 650cfm instead of the Edlebrock carb. I know a guy that is getting rid of one. Gonna see if that make a difference over the Carter carb. Not my DD so I can afford to play with it a little bit.

An Edelbrock carburetor is a rebranded Carter carburetor, so swapping one for the other would be a bit silly.

nad if going holley get offroad carb or plan on problems offroad with std carb.

if you realy want great carb get q-jet but thay dont fit stock rpm intakes.

I would leave the intake that is on it. on a mild engine i doubt you would see much difference.

I have a performer with egr on my 406sbc. it is a 10:1 engine with performer heads and a 270 magnum cam (224/224 @ 50). I had extensive work done to the heads and intake to make them flow properly. Half of the runners on the intake flowed stock numbers (160-170) and the other half were good for performance (220-240). When the intake was done, all of the runners were within a few cfm of each other and well above 200. The intake now is almost an identical match to the flow numbers of one of the well sought after non smog legal manifolds.

The heads were nasty when they came from edelbrock also. They required a lot of work above the intake valves. The head guy went to a slightly bigger intake valve because of the amount of material he had to clean up.

I was surprised to learn that many of the aftermarket manufacturers parts can vary like mine did. There are some good ones out there, but you can't tell without flow checking the parts.

The same head guy said there are some china made aluminum heads out there (pro comp?) that are actually very good and only take a little work to get the most out of them.

Without testing the performer and the rpm it would be hard to know what the real differences are. Some people think the rpm is good for more power, and you already have it on the engine and it doesn't have issues. Don't fix what isn't broke.
