Alright, I'm no rock crawler. I am just a normal DD, firelane drivin', Hunting, Mild-Offroading kinda guy. (some mud, nothing major). I think my 600 CFM Edelbrock with electric choke will work good on my stock 350 with just headers and a performer intake for the type of driving I do. What say you folks ? :dunno:

Should work just fine. I had a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb on my 86 F-250 with a .30 over 460, a Crane 260H cam and dual exhaust and it was good to go. And it was a fire road drivin', hunting, mild offroading truck as well.

I'd still go Q-jet.

I had the Edlebrock 1406 for a few years, and even 'mild' stuff I'd have flooding and stalling. A good bounce could cause issues, not just hills. Hills were bad.

Great for street only, pretty easy to tune. So is a Q-jet so I don't see any reason not to just stick with a Q-jet.

I already had this 1406 Edelbrock. It came with the engine. I took this engine out of my old 83 Blazer, but the engine origanally came out of a 85 van. I put it in my 82 K30 after I got rid of the rotten Blazer body.

I picked up a semi fresh 350, mild cam, headers, performer intake and 1406 for a buck fifty... runs like a champ. I ain't throwing the q-jet on cause it works! I say run it and see what you get.

I wasnt all that impressed by the 1406 when I had it on my old truck, worked great in a car though.

Yea, it was running when I pulled it, but it sat for quite awhile, so I had the 1406 rebuilt by a buddy of mine who is a carb. God.

That's the carb I have for my burb....just till I can send my Q-jet off to Jet & have them go through it....

I would get a offroad needle and seat kit for sure, I put them in my 1406,and it made a good bit of difference on hills and rough stuff. By no means it a replacement for FI but it worked a WHOLE lot better.

Thanks for that tip.....I found a short article on that.....linky

I installed the offroad needle and seat in my 1405 and it did make a big difference...

I have the 1406 on my dd also. very easy to tune and stays tuned. starts the same every morning and performs great...so long as i don't leave the pavement.

I'm not familiar with their off road kit, but I am familiar with the Q-jet i"ll be putting on there soon...

on a side note to tuning the 1406, and someting I haven't messed with. It seems tip in throttle response is almost too much. Like its hard to ease away from a stop light. It kinda jumps forward into part throttle. I have to really concentrate to crawl forward. Its kind of a pain in parking lots because its like i'm gunning the engine instead of idleing through the parking lot like i'd like to. anyone else experience this?

The Edelbrock carb is very easy to tune...if you don't have an owners manual, you can download it from the Edelbrock website.
It tells you step by step how to tune with jets, metering rods, and metering rod springs...there are also 3 settings on the accelerator pump that can be adjusted.
You can order a kit that has several jets, metering rods, and step up springs.
I spent an afternoon tuning mine and what a difference it made it both performance and gas mileage.
The offroad needles are spring loaded so you don't have flooding issues when offroading or during hard cornering, acceleration, or braking. They are very easy to install too.
All in all, the Edelbrock carbs are very easy to tune once you learn how...I hear so many people bash the Edelbrocks because they don't work perfectly out of the box. No carb works perfect out of the box...all carbs need to be tuned to the specific motor they are installed on...it just takes a little time.
Also the 1406 comes from the factory for fuel economy and the 1405 is for performance...difference is in the primary jets, metering rods, and step up springs.
