So, I decided NOT to light the Blazer on fire and walk away. Yayyyyyy.....

I pulled the alternator off and got it tested. The machine couldn't even run the test...fried.

The one I just took off is a 94-amp with a 2-pin connector. I don't think I should attempt changing something to a 4-pin with my level of expertise...or lack thereof.

Are there any other options with a serpentine pulley that go for more than 94 amps that you guys know of?

Grabbing a newer alternator and doing some wiring would be the cheapest way. The simplest would be to have a shop rebuild your fried alternator with higher-current internals. You can probably find the same thing from some online vendor.

Do you really need more current, though? Possibly your alt was dying for some time and a stock replacement is all you need. What kind of electrical stuff have you added to the truck?

I don't have anything added now, so I should probably just go with the 94. I would like to add, at most, a pair of aux lights.

When I got nearly stranded last week due to a flood, and due to the face I was driving a minivan, I remembered why I got the truck in the first place.

I have no subs, no weldernator, nothing. Just the truck.

Maybe just get it running and upgrade it all later...

Since you don't have a year listed but you do say serpintine belt i'm going to guess you have an 89-91 blazer and those came factory with a 105amp alternator and you could get a 140amp optional.

yep not a full serpentine system . that's the early alt only system .

so make sure you get a alt that's not for a 88-95 style system . as it will be to small size of the case . and different plug.

but if you find what you want and it has v-belt pulley just swap yours over is all.

I have replaced the starter and alternator on the truck; both were fried. I have power everywhere but the ignition. I have accessories, and I have lights...but cranking the key gets me nothing. Ideas?

EDIT: I also appear to have no power at the radio somehow.

The radio works! Huzzah!

OK, so it won't start. That fusible link would kill the ability to start?

I have no idea what fried with it, but it killed the starter and the alt...and the fusible link, maybe, too?

All fuses appear good.

OK: ECMB fuse blown. Swapping in a new fuse immediately sparks and blows.

One note: everything was working fine, with no problems, until the problems at the start of this thread. Any ideas?

ive had my camaro alternator fry and take out the starter, but check make sure you dont have any exposed wires.

Double check to make sure you hooked the little wire up to the correct post and it isn't shorted out anywhere. Either will cause the starter to not work.

Thanks for the idea, AR.

My diagram has the red wires hooking up to the same place. In other words, I'm confident I have the two wires hooked up together on the back of the alternator. Does this sound wrong?

(There's also the plug that goes into the only spot it could, the receptacle.)

effffffff.

I'll get to play tomorrow.

Would that be enough to get the power working everywhere...but no starter? And would that short out that fuse?

The small wire is just 12 volt trigger for the starter solenoid. It won't effect power anywhere else. Blowing the ECM fuse like it is would make me think you have burnt wires somewhere. What else has no power .
The alt fried along with the starter, only thing common to both is the one of the red wires from the starter to the alt.

The fuse popping is probably a different reason...if you put the purple "crank" wire on the wrong terminal (the "R" terminal instead of the "S") ,it wont crank over when you turn the key--the other accessories should still get power and work ,provided you hooked the red wires with the fuse links and large eyelets to the right spot (on top of the positive battery cable at the solenoid)...

I would inspect those red wires good, the fusible links might be half fried, they are routed in a metal pipe near the tranny dipstick tube and it gets hot,and they can fail "halfway" and you'll still get some voltage, but maybe not enough to operate the starter properly..those wires often chafe and short out,and that can cause other fuses to blow...

I thought we had no power to the radio, but the radio fuse was blown. Swapped one in, it was fine.

So, as we're trying to establish what was what, we looked again, closer, at the fuses. ECM was blown. It's a 10. We put in a 15, and with the key in the acc position, it blew with a spark immediately.

When all wires were hooked up, and with a new radio fuse, we had power to everything: brakes, turn signals, fan, radio, headlights, horn.
