I don’t want my parts identifying thread mixed up with transmission talk, even though I started it.

What are the pros and cons to the TH400

You may know but just to say it out loud...

The trans pictured is a desirable "heavy duty" case. There are undrilled bosses on the flexplate cover flanges that can be drilled to accept the thicker aluminum cover (factory holes are threaded but I just used nuts & bolts to make it easy). It is also a deep pan version which has at least one drum with more clutches than a shallow pan type.

Even though it's a 2wd version, that length tailshaft will will fit a pre '85 figure 8 bolt pattern 205 with a short 32 spline input and the factory adapter.

Pros - A strong, reliable transmission.
Cons- Very tall 1’st gear ratio, no overdrive.

Is it worth getting rebuilt or should I look for a TH350?

I guess it depends on the use. People say the th400 take a noticeable amount of Jo to run it back other transmissions, I don’t know. I guess it depends on if you want heavy duty or regular.

What kind of torque you plan on putting through it?
The 400 w a couple minor mods during a rebuild can take 450-500 ft lbs.
More than that a few more upgrades are necessary for up to 600.... more than that your replacing input shafts, drums, etc.
Fairly simple to rebuild with a good book and careful assembly.

Nothing wrong with a 400. Good strong trans. will tow, haul, stand up to a big block That is a nice trans. It may not even need a rebuild. They do take more HP to run, iirc @ 35 hp and the TH350 is @ 13 hp. Dragster or gas mileage TH350. Tow haul Big Block th400

I guess a previous owner wanted to race the vehicle but never got around to it... so it sat, taken apart for almost 18 years or so.

Pull the pan to check for surface rust, if its clean, run it!
