Been driving my 87 k5 5.7L ,Tbi,700r4 Tranny, 392 gears with no cats and plugged Egr Valve. When I'm Cruising on Hwy for about 15-20 Min at 55/65 Mph the Service engine Light Kicks on.Should I get a new Egr and connect it? Does it make a difference even though I don't have Cat? Does anybody have any experience with this issue? Thx

I probably won't be any help, but what code is being set?

Read up on getting the code -- takes a paperclip, easy to do -- and work from there. Otherwise you're gonna throw money at the thing without knowing the target.

it's about a 93% chance that you are correct, and it is throwing an EGR code.. that is generally the time it will throw one.. but you should verify, 2 minutes and a paper clip...

whether you can get that to be code-free without a cat, I have no idea..

OBD-I has no post cat O2 sensor, so it has no idea whether the cat is there or not, or even if it is working if it is.

EGR was around before cats were, fix it.

You're probably getting a Code 32 which is EGR. I've been chasing the same problem down in my 88 Suburban for 3 years. I've got no cats, (thanks previous owner..arsehole), and active EGR. It happens at part throttle above 30mph and light load, like on flat ground cruising on the highway. Like others have said, look up checking the codes to verify. Unfortunately I'm no help as to what it takes to fix because I've taken the intake off, cleaned the ports, changed the EGR twice and the solenoid twice as well and it's still acting like a brat. Good luck and if you do fix it, post up and let us know how you did it.

Same here. The previous owner removed everything. No emissions at all.In New York State u don't need it if the vechile was made before 92. I'm gonna swap out the Egr because the Egr definitely is bad. It just annoys me when that service engine light goes on.

That's what I'm gonna do. $52 for a aftermarket Egr and $ 100 for the Ac/Delco. I have the Vacuum Hoses. Thx Everybody for there Input and Help.U guys are the best!

Any driving symptoms? I'm wondering if, with no Cat, if my EGR valve is a) even doing anything and b) causing any of my occasional idle bumps and/or slight hesitation...Thanks

The original poster hasn't been on for a year so you may not get a response from him. But if you want to know if the EGR is causing your issues, plug off the EGR and see if it runs better. You will get a CEL light to tell you that your EGR isn't hooked up but it won't hurt to run your vehicle while doing this test. If it runs better then you'll know that the EGR could be the culprit. Also check the EGR solenoid. You should get a code 32 if you block off your EGR.

My 1973 307 V8 that came out of a Chevelle has (or had ,until I deleted it!)--an EGR valve factory...GM didn't start putting catalitic converters on vehicles until 1974..
I think 1973 was the first year EGR was introduced on GM's..
