EGR woes

Asking for my buddy. He put an Edelbrock Performer TBI intake I sold him on a few months ago. I got it off ebay, and it came with an EGR on it. He put it on, and a day or two later his CEL came on, usually after about 10-15 minutes of driving, and the code reader said EGR system.

So he tossed his old EGR on it off his stock intake, and it did the same thing, and obviously before the intake swap, it never did it.

Besides replacing it with a new one, anyother thing he should look at?

TIA!

One thing to add, when it comes on, he says it doesn`t drive any different.

I'd guess the vacuum line or solenoid isn't hooked up or operating correctly.

The ECM tests EGR for normal operation, if it fails the test, you get a CEL. The ECM watches for a drop in MAP values when the EGR is commanded to open (it's a vacuum leak) and if it doesn't see that drop, then it throws the CEL.

If the valve doesn't open, there is no leak, thus a CEL. Of course, if the EGR valve is hanging open, then there would be no difference either, but unlikely as an open EGR valve leads to horrible performance which would be obvious at all times.

This kid can`t make up his mind. Says sometimes it does run a little rough :crazy:

Could it also be his map sensor?

Any word on a solution for this? I just picked up an ALDL cable and WinALDL is showing the EGR code 32 constantly. It's on when the engine in started cold or when it's been run.

The weird thing is that it doesn't throw the SES light unless I've been driving for awhile. It can be anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, and only while i'm on the highway. I replaced the EGR valve a little over a year ago along with the TBI gasket due to high idle and that fixed the idle problem. No other vacuum leaks that i'm aware of and the engine runs fine whether or not the SES light is on.:confused::confused:

I think all he ended up doing was replacing it and it fixed the problem.

You found this post, were you able to find others where we discuss EGR? We were talking about the ECM-commanded test procedures, which might help you.

Yeah I spent another hour and a half last night looking them over. That's frustrating that ther is no consensus on what triggers it, everything from O2 sensors to IAC valves to distributors...

I have a suspicion the EGR port on the intake is gummed up, although it very well could be the valve itself or the solenoid. I gathered some things to try and places to check...it would appear you've been involved in most of the discussions, Dorian. I thank you for that info, hopefully I can identify the issue.

If he didn't go with a factory replacement per gm for said year....he needs to find what part number went on said valve as there are several types...pos/neg....and depending on oem number one must install and then stake in the proper washer or just off idle it will stumble from choking on to much exhaust gas...

Well I checked it out this afternoon and the vacuum line between the EGR solenoid and the throttle body was disconnected.:o I did the valve cover gaskets a couple of months ago, so either I forgot to reconnect it or it popped off when I was reconnecting the AIR diverter valve. I haven't had the chance to take it on the highway, but after clearing the ECM the code is gone.
