Elec. Tailgate Swap ?\'s

I am going from a broken manual to electric tail gate off a '78 k5. I checked the chilton's manual and it gives no definitive electrical info on the set up. I got a yellow & green wire then an orange wire with a plug (?) type thinga-ma-jig. anyone got suggestions?

Yeah,
Stay with the manual, I have had nothing but problems from my electric and it's going as soon as I find the parts to change it over to manual!

well i have to replace my manual. it is rusted out. any idea on how to do the wiring? i cannot find any info in my chilton's manual. any help would be great as the install is tomorrow. thanks!

no one has ever swapped an electric tailgate onto a truck taht came with a mechanical tailgate?? msquared was joking cuz he is the poor sap that is going to help me wire it...

Hey zakk.. I just swapped mine not to long ago. I had a 79 that wasn't hooked up for it. We bought an 89 power tailgate, with wiring harness complete. This is the easiest way. I'm not sure how you would go about wiring your other one up. We had to basically find out from someone else where the wires ran cause none of the books have anything on tailgate wiring. The wires run up the driverside frame tucked inside, then come in on the firewall, i believe my b/f had to drill a hole for the wires to go in, I don't remember for sure. I bought a new switched for the wiring harness, for 16.00 at the dealership. I'm up in sac if you want to come look at the wiring set up. Kinda a far drive though. Best way is to get an already wired gate and wiring harness though.

stay manual!!!! hell i took mine out completely and run a custom lexan glass for my rear window, 5lbs. vs. 45lbs and no complications.

Tan is down...
Blue is up...

There's another wire there...can't remember offhand though.

I agree, stay manual, you'll never have to pray for your window to work. Lot less hassle, especially if you have to wire the whole thing. Just my .03 cents.
