electric choke question

where can you wire the postive cable to for the electric choke. the instructions say not the alternator or coil. everything i tried was always live and i dont really want to take all the panel below the ignition off if possible because it never fits right when i put it back on.
 
I use the exciter wire from the alternator. It's the smaller brown wire that runs from the 2 prong harness that goes into most pre-efi alternators.
 
Yes, I've been running it that way for at least 5 years, and my old mechanic uncle used to do it the same way on his hot rods.

I think that instructions might be refering to the main power wire, which is live all the time.
