electric impact?

I'm replacing the water pump / timing belt in my 2006 Aveo. The crank shaft pulley bolt is supposedly 70 ft lbs, but my total POS cheap air compressor + total POS cheap HF impact wrench can't break the bolts loose. Normally, I'd just throw a big cheater bar on and crank it, but I need an impact for this. Since the car is already taken apart, driving it somewhere isn't an option...nor is buying a cooler air compressor / impact. I was thinking maybe renting an electric one. Anything I need to know as far as specs to look for etc? I don't have time to try 3-4 different ones to get this to work, I need to zap these dang bolts off.

I know they make corded and battery powered ones. Where the car is sitting right now is about 15' from an outlet, so presuming it makes more ft-lbs, I'm assuming corded is the way to go? :dunno:
 
I bought a 1/2" pneumatic impact from Northern Hydraulics about 10 years ago...abused the hell out of it and it still works like a champ:waytogo:


I've been eyeballing a Milwaukee Electric cordless unit...May get one soon if I can catch them on sale. Just not too keen battery packs yet...
 
The corded ones are the least spendy option, have plenty of balls, but are a bit on the bulky side. If room isn't a huge concern I'd go corded...

70 ft lbs? The 1/4 drive ones will almost break that loose.

You dont' have a friend or a CK5 member near you with a bigger pneumatic?

Ive got a 1/2" drive makita that would do it, but as said above, they are bulky.
 
Some of the new milwaukee fuel cordless units are approaching 800 ft-lbs for hte 1/2" drive version. I have the pre fuel model that is like 450 ft-lbs, it's pretty strong. I think with todays recent updates the cordless models have actually outdated the corded ones in torque.
 
have you tried loading up the pneumatic impact with some extra oil? Sometime that extra torque will be enough to pop it loose.

This is a great tip. Run a fair bit of oil into it, and run at WOT for a while, I often shake it too. Amazing how much you can hear the Rpms increase on an old neglected tool when you do this. May make enough of a difference to get the job done.
 
i rented a Milwaukee today. $18 for 24 hours. zapped the bolt right off. tR totally nailed it though...2 of the 3 bolts I was working on didn't have enough room to fit the electric in there. THANKFULLY those ones were not crusted on as tight and my air-powered one was somehow able to get them once I loosed them a bit with a hammer/box wrench. Anyway, I think it's all back together right (knock on wood!), so the impact goes back to the tool place tomorrow!
 
Well, hard to beat an $18 rental vs. buying something. :waytogo:
 
I have a milwaukee fuel impact the 3/8 version. I use it alot on ring and pinions. Bolts that are occasionally have over a 100 ft lb spec. Never had it not break them loose. It's an impressive tool and really compact. Similarly sized to a 3/8 pneumatic impact
 
I'm interested in why the breaker bar route wouldnt work....:dunno:

I know it's done now... just wondering
 
Cause when you get to the last bolt the pulleys just turn when you crank it? I could have found a way to bind/jam something through the pulley thing I suppose, but that doesn't seem like the proper way to do it. :dunno:
 
thats what i was thinkin after I posted.... impact would definitely help solve that lol
