Got a strange issue going on with the signal circuit on my K5. Checked all the grounds (all that I know of) because usually that seems to be the issue with these sort of problems.

Whats happening is this: Turn on left turn signal and only thing that happens is the front signal lights up but doesnt flash, nothing happens out back. Turn on the right signal, it flashes real fast (all bulbs) and the LR turn signal is also flashing along with it.

Hazard circuit works fine

Any ideas?

Have you checked the wires and cleaned the contacts? I hate dealing with wiring but find dirty contacts are often the problem on the old beasts that I drive. Can either use a pencil eraser and "erase off" the grime and/or electric contact cleaner spray and hose it really good. If you have one, use a multimeter and check that socket to see if it is getting juice when it is just left turn. If it is, try replacing that left rear bulb and see if that helps. That actually cured the problem on my truck once for some strange reason. Almost identical symptoms except for the hazards. If it isn't getting juice with just left turn but is with hazards, that makes it sound more like a wiring issue so check the wires for bare spots.

I hope that helps some.

The grounds are notorious for coming/breaking off. Bad grounds also cause weird sh!t to happen. Check the grounds at the corners.

Keep it simple when trying to diagnose it. People tend to over think these things. more than likely its a multifuction switch, or the relay. multimeter and testlight will be your best friend. check the voltage at the flasher on the fuse panel when your cycle the switch. find a wiring diagram to see what wires going into the flasher go to which light. but if find the flasher to be bad ohm out the circuits to make sure you dont have a short to the frame or youll keep going through parts and pulling your hair out. incase that you do have a short to the frame, find the different connectors in the harness and work your way towards the problem by unpluging the connectors and ohming out the contacts in the where the flasher plugs into the fuse panel. PM and ill give you a password to alldatapro so you can pull up diagrams and what not.

Negative on the flasher and the grounds. I hadnt done any real deep diagnosis when I posted this yesterday just wanted to see if anybody had any past experience with this.

Tested for voltage at the signal switch, tested voltage to the flasher/switched flashers, tested at the connector on the firewall, and on down the line. Didnt have any voltage at the bulb socket when the signal was on but did when the hazards and right signal was on.

I ran a jumper wire from the firewall connector to the socket and it operated fine. From that it was clear that there was a break in the LR signal wire but it was somehow backfeeding from the RR side. Started looking at the wiring where it splits off to each rear lamp. The LR signal wire was cut cleanly and for some reason the wire from the RR signal wire was tied into the left side harness. Screw PO's.

I see the same person that wired my 75 also worked on yours :haha: I've been doing a lot of electrical repairs lately too. Amazing what you find sometimes. When I bought this 75 K5 3 weeks ago, the fuel gauge wasn't working. Traced the wiring from the tank towards the front and found about 3 inches of bare wire that was shorting out on the frame where it turns and goes up under the hood. My 78 isn't much better and I have only had it for 2 days now but while underneath dealing with my trans issues, I have already found several bad wires and useless wires for aftermarket accessories that aren't even hooked up anymore.

Good job on finding and fixing the problem. Wiring issues are a pain in the butt.
