I could spend a lot of time refurbishing it and making it look new, but I think I'd rather let somebody else do that...if they buy it

I kept the '74 GMC grille off my '77 GMC K2500,also kept the 454 grille emblem too,and the grille off the '73 K1500 I had years ago...both are hanging in my garage..neither are mint,a tooth or two was removed on both to allow plow hoses to pass thru them,I just figured if nothing else, they look cool hanging on the wall!..

I always thought the '74 GMC grille was the best looking one of all the square body ones,I wasn't aware they dont make re-pro ones of them though..(being the most wanted you'd think they would?)..

Back when my brother and I used to sell parts at swap meets, one day I decided to take a cardboard box we had FULL of various fender emblems and poke them onto the cardboard, instead of having people paw thru the box to see what we had..I put a $5 price on most of them, and I bet we sold 100 bucks worth in one or two days!..I guess they are harder to find than I thought--most boneyards here will just give them to you or not charge much if you buy another part, but lately they seem to think everything HAS to be worth at least 10 bucks...

I suppose I'm lucky a few places here will still let me go walking around in the yard, many that used too wont any more,no more "pick and pull" at most junkyards now--and the scrapyard is the place I miss having access too most--you could buy anything you wanted there--steel to build things, small engines, lawn tractors that had very few things wrong with them,etc...no more!--...they claim "insurance regulations",the place I bought that kind of stuff at had someone get hurt and they sued, thats when they locked the gates--but at the junkyards,I bet its more likely people brought toolboxes in and stuffed them with small parts and bought one "big" part,to smuggle out the small items..

One day I watched the owner of one yard tell a customer to "open his toolbox",and inside it was a wiper & headlamp switch, about 50 fuses, radio and door knobs, and various other trinkets, which he refused to let the guy pay for after getting caught trying to sneak off with them--instead he kicked him off the property, and said if they ever returned, the police will be called..
He then tossed the parts into a junk cars trunk after they left!..:doah:

He looked at me,and said "so what are YOU here for"?..I showed him ALL the parts I wanted, including a few small items I wanted, and the bolts & screws I took off to remove them...and he just waved me off, said "take 'em--at least you SHOW me everything your taking!--one thing I cant stand is a thief!"..

I cant say I blame him,but some places now even want to charge you for BOLTS you kept when you removed something..and core charges are now the norm, since many core suppliers will pay 50+ bucks for a junk tranny to rebuild,or starters,etc..thats why many yards here dont even want to sell used transmissions or electrical parts ,they can get almost as much for cores, with no comebacks or customer disatisfaction..at worst they cash your old part in for scrap,so they make out one way or another..

I used to restore army 30 trucks years back. GMC 135 and 211 6x6's mostly. Kaiser 715's too. There was a military junk yard in Clinton MA that was owned by a guy by the name of Nathan Schwartz. Great place and he was a great guy. I could go with 6 bald tires and rims and get 6 like new ND military tires on like new rims for $40 each.
When I would go through his yard I would fill my tool box with the hard to find things like 24v headlamps and marker bulbs, resistors, etc. I would also fill my truck with the big parts. When I went back down to the garage to pay I would always open my tool box and show him all the small stuff. He NEVER charged me once for those small parts and would always let me roam his yard when he often refused others.
Once, I had been approached by a couple of Cape Verde guys looking for a couple landing craft to service the CV islands. I set them up with Nathan and about a year and have later I got a $4000 check in the mail I never expected. Turns out they bought two LC's and that was my commission for the lead!
Nathan has passed long time now and his yard is a housing development. Last time I drove up the road his old white painted block garage was all that was left of it. Another era gone.

I knew him!-used to live in Leominster Ma and I sold him parts when I worked in a auto parts store there...I only went to his place a few times to deliver stuff though, never had the pleasure of walking thru his yard..

Another large junkyard on Rt.70 off Rt.117 up the road from Clinton in Lancaster Ma was Dufour's ,he had stuff dating back to the 30's,but he was a hard guy to get a good deal from, and didn't let many people roam around in his yard, but I got to know him from waiting on him,and ended up buying quite a bit of parts from him and a few friends bought whole vehicles from him --he had a row of old city busses parked along the road stuffed full of engines and trannies from many old muscle cars and 50's cars you never see anywhere else..had tons of old trucks too, everything from tilt cabs to military stuff, and just about every vehicle you could think of,there was one in his yard somewhere..

Sadly,he ended up selling the property ,I think he has passed away since too--and all the stuff was either crushed on site and hauled away for scrap,or sold to collectors..I think another salvage company bought the property, but doesn't sell parts to the public now...a huge indoor flea market was built a few hundred feet up the road from his place, that has now been closed, due to lack of enough people to sell things I guess...

My older brother used to work at a small garage in Ashby MA next to the police station...its all gone now,not even the building remains...its sad to see all your childhood memories fall into disrepair and eventually get bulldozed into oblivion..

I would have left the emblems right on the counter and left. I don't go for"buy them or don't come back". My favorite emblem is on the front of my ride.
