Emergency brake pops off at times - is this a common issue? Replace or just adjust?

the cable or the peddle? could you elaborate?
The pedal. Like I will engage it and I don't know if it's because it's not pressed down far enough but the pedal will just pop loose and disengage. 84 K5

So it's pressed down then randomly out of nowhere pops back up as if the release was pulled but it wasn't.

is the releas handle pulled slightly? look at its travle pull it out push in

Release handle still feel like it's spring loaded ?
If the release handle is sticking or the spring is weak, it may not be engaging the teeth properly on the ratchet. may just need lubed or bent to allow free travel.
Also check that the mechanism is bolted solid to the cab and no bolts are loose or missing.

Post up a picture of the teeth on the pedal side if you can..

.

I think this might be an issue. The release handle doesn't feel right to me. Also, I don't know if this is normal but when I pull the release it seems like the pedal pops up too high. It seems like something isn't right there. It makes a really loud noise when you release the parking brake. Could there be too much spring tension maybe? Maybe this is normal though, dunno. I will try to get some pics up tomorrow.

It would be nice to not have to spend so much money to replace it but I feel like it might be worth it to replace it because that's something you definitely don't want to fail. haha

Not to hijack, when replacing the pedal assembly I'm curious how the front cable end comes out of the pedal assembly. I've got to replace my front cable to complete my park brake system to the earlier ('83 and older) in my '91. I'm not sure which way I'm going to have to go after it. By looking at the new cable end I'm guessing it's just a clip or something that holds it in. I have not poked my head back under the dash for a visual.

So do you have to remove the pedal assembly to get the cable out or can it be left alone? Anybody got a pedal assembly loose to take a pic of?

Again not completely trying to hijack, but feel the information should be helpful to the OP that might be replacing the pedal assembly for his problem.

The pedal doesn't have to be touched..when I did all the E-brake cables in my '82 K2500 I had never replaced a pedal cable, but it was simple.

Here's a illustration of an '84 that should be the same setup..

No worries! It will help me too. Right now I am in the process of putting my fuel tank back in then I will post pics of the E-brake mechanism.
