I'm trying to get the old girl ready for state inspections. One issue I have is that the emergency brake constantly shows that's it's on. I know nothing about this system, how do I solve this problem. What do I check and look for?
There are two things that drive the light. One is the switch on the parking brake pedal, so you should peek up there and make sure that moving the pedal lever pushes the plunger on the switch. (You could check it with an ohmmeter too, but I'd be more suspicious of the thing just being loose or the plastic busted, which the old "visual inspection" will catch.)

Yes, but not all of them light up, my 80 does not light up anything but the seat belt light when you switch the key on. Although, currently my Brake warning light is on because I believe I lost a wheel cylinder. I have to tear into and see.
gawd, i would fail miserably, no e-brake, no warning lights, no key to turn, etc. Im sure if he checks the prop valve wire and ebrake lever wire like dremu suggested, he'll be fine. I thought smog was bad, but inspections sound worse. Good luck.
