my friend just became a fellow ck5er and bought a blazer here in phoenix and attempted to drive it home to Colorado. He is having engine difficulty. Maybe a rocker related issue. Does anyone want to help him? Can anyone help him? Will anyone help him?

His name is Patrick and he is stranded somewhere between Holbrook AZ and Gallup New Mexico (actually closer to Holbrook). He was driving on i-40 on his way to Fairplay Colorado.

Someone with knowledge of engines or at least with tools would be appreciated. He planned on making BB08 in Moab... He is my best friend and I will drive there if no one helps him that is closer.

my number
480-304-2116

his number

970-445-7173

He might need a safe place to wrench and sleep. and tools. Maybe anyone in albuquerque will help.

Thanks for looking.

If you were to post the symptoms maybe i can help with info at least from this end. It might be a simple fix that he can do himself if he knew what to look for.

under acceleration he is experiencing dieseling and chugging. Mtnman thinks it is a loose rocker or something and Pat is going to remove the valve covers to inspect it.

I will get better description tomorrow morn. His details have been very vague so far.

Is he somewhere safe? I've made the drive through there a handfull of times and I know there are places I definately wouldn't want to be stranded...

If it were a loose rocker it would be making a clicking or tapping noise. It sounds like he could be having detonation issues, that will sound like marbles rolling around a cylinder when under acceleration and go away when you let off the gas.

original diagnosis was vapor lock. but i'm not sure what he found. he's calling me tomorrow morn. He's sleeping in the truck tonight.

Vapor lock happens when the fuel gets hot enough to boil in the fuel line and make air pockets. Have him make sure that all of his fuel lines are clear of any exhaust or other sources of heat. If it's really hot outside and he has any fuel lines that are "close enough" to a constant heat source this could bring on the vapor lock even though he may not have issues at other times when the ambient temp isn't as hot.

I've had vapor lock once a million years ago and i can tell you it brings the suck when it's HOT as **** outside and you don't have AC AND the truck won't run so that you can at least have 2/55 AC (2 windows down at 55mph).

I assume he is carb'd. Haven't heard of vapor lock problems on FI.

For a temporary fix for vapor lock, he can carry a spray bottle of water and when he locks up, pull over, turn the engine off and spray down the mechanical fuel pump and the fuel lines, then just wait. It's slow going but it would allow him to drive the truck to somewhere safe where he can do a more permanent fix.

My vapor lock (on my 76) was epic (I was on a road trip too). To fix it permanently I removed the mechanical fuel pump and blocked the port on the block, added an electric pump (mounted near the gas tank), moved the fuel lines well away from any source of heat (re-routed them up from the rail rear of the block onto the firewall to the carb, then wrapped the fuel lines along the whole run from the electric pump to the carb in high heat Tec wrap . No more vapor lock.

status change:
found looser rocker bolts under the valve covers:doah:
tightened them and he is back on the road headed toward albuquerque.

Vaya Sin Dios Patrick!
Godspeed to Colorado... I'll pray that you make it with your ass intact:D

If this wasn't a problem when he first started out and while driving the rocker nuts became loose there is another problem that needs to get fixed otherwise it will happen again. The first thing is to have him check that all the rocker studs are about even height at the tops, if any are standing taller then a stud is pulling out of the head and will require an oversize stud be installed (dorman 693005 and takes a special reamer) or drill and tap that hole for a screw in rocker stud without a hex nut at the bottom (dorman 693006). If all studs are equal height then check for rocker arm movement (flat cam problem).

Yes - we went through all of that - the nuts backed off of the stud, he got some nuts @ the hardware store and double-nutted the ones that backed off. I guess he made it home Juan?

update:
pat arrived in Fairplay, Colorado last night around midnight. All is well. Just engine is throwing code.... time to get ready for BB08

Thanks to all who helped and offered opinion and tech support. Just another reason why ck5 is awesome.:D
