emergency please

Just changed my alternator...

hooked everything back up right...went to start it a loud scraping sound is heard and smells like something is burnin bad...but i see no smoke or anything...PLEASE help

is the belt to tight or to loose

I useed a scrrew driver and pryed it up farther and started it...to tight..

i dident know a belt could be too tight...

i think its a belt

spin the engine by hand make sure you didnt reck the belt in one spot.if you did it could possably jump off at higher rpm or even ruin the bearings in the alternator good luck

I fixed it it turned out the orignal belt was too short or small ...wrong size...i went out and got a slightly bigger one and its working...yay i have a car again

1978 350 installed...and out if possible

mines not stock but its a 79, dont know if that will help. the vac lines are a bit different

FYI - Scraping sounds and burning smells are not normally an indication that things are hooked up right.
