emission failed again

Okay, just a random thought here, and I could be way off, but I may have a solution to how you can pass emissions. It won't fix your truck, though.

What if he pulled the wires from the injector and spark plug on #8? It'd be running on 7 cylinders, but it doesn't sound like that's much different from now. Also with the injector unplugged it wouldn't be flooding on the cylinder.

Just a thought. I could be way off.

Have you checked for trouble codes???? That should be your first step. The computer may be able to tel you what is wrong.

Is the timing set right? it should be set at 0* with the timing bypass disconnected. Changing the timing on a TBI truck can screw things up. The ECM is set up to run at 0*

im tired right now and im not sure if im thinking of this right. If that engine has its own lobe per cylinder on the camshaft. It is possible the lobe is worn out.

Today, pull that plug out. Spray carb clean or brake clean and get all the gas off it. Put it back in. Put your timing light lead on that spark plug wire. Fire the truck up. And see if your getting a strobe light out of that timing light.

If you dont. Then you need to look inside your distributor or plug wire.
See if the magnetic pickup looks okay inside the dist. Or crank the engine over by hand and have the rotor cap off, and check to see if the dist rotor/internal is turning smoothly.

The plug shouldn't foul that quickly to cause a misfire.

I doubt this is a fuel injection problem. Unless your one injector is stuck, and it is dripping fuel into that one cylinder while it is sitting and foulding the plug.

If you have a vacuum gauge, hook it up and see if it has a steady vac too.

As mentioned, its TBI..the problem would exist on all fed cylinders if the injector was the problem.

Bad cam lobe came to mind for me as well...bad exhaust lobe would have the cylinder filling with fuel and not exhausting it...even if the plug worked, the cylinder would be "contaminated" by the remaining exhaust. You'd still have good compression since the exhaust valve itself isn't bad.

Had a bad intake valve, very odd problems that only made sense once I *really* thought about what was going on.

Ok say it is my distributer for a temp fix could i put my hei out of my 86 i have the motor fom in there. Cause i am broke as a joke i am going back to work on the 7th of feb caus ewe get laid off of work for 1 month or more everyyear so cash is tight.

you could but it would take a little bit of wiring changes you would also get a check engine light because you would be cuttin out the computer timming and knock sensors. all you need to run a HEI is a wire that provides 12v in run and a vacum source.

even if it is TBI. If you turn off your vehicle. And that injector is stuck open. It is going to dribble fuel until the pressure is released in the fuel line. It is possible that your vehicle isn't on level surface and those drops of fuel is going to that one cylinder.

all you need to do is see if your system is holding pressure after an hour.

ok so i got the miss to almost go away still there but not as bad i think it is in the distributer but i am not sure. I am going to test it tomorrow now that it is running some what better. Plus i have a secret weapon that might help me. :dunno: :screwy: my boss got pissed that it won't pass so while i was working today he took my truck hooked up a line into the exhaust and ran that into the cab with a freah air tank for filling tires turn the valve and fresh air is injected in the cat like a air pump:ignore:  hope it works if not i am ordering that adjustable regulator and am going to cut the fuel off as much as i can Thanks for eveyone help and ideas i hop this works.

Skipping all of the posts, if you haven't done something to the engine that requires adjustable FPR, you are just wasting time and money.

Stock the system will pass emissions fine, something is not working correctly, thats all there is to it. Heck, it COULD be the fuel pressure regulator that is bad, I don't know the symptoms, but trying to cut fuel back if something else is wrong isn't going to solve the problem. MAYBE mask it, more than likely just cause other problems.

hank hill "yup"

that high of HC is 99.9% of the time an ignition issue.

another thing to check is your evap system. The machines here in illinois suck all the surrounding air. And if your evap system or gas tank has leaks, it will suck that in.

do you have the other numbers of the emissions?
if your CO is passing and co2, id look into an evap issue.

THANKS TO ALL THAT HELPED ME  :thumb: she passed to day i retarded the timeing and hooked up my little tank idea and it passed by 2 points now to finish tuneing it i just ordered a adj pressure regulator just in case mine is bad. This is why i joined for all the good help thanks guys keep up the good work.
