Ive just bought my first 89 GMC Jimmy. Guy needed some money and had to get rid of few toys. But he did upgrade to 350 engine. Now the problem im having is he didnt put any emission stuff back on truck. Ive gone to GMC to ask for maybe a breakdown on parts for emission. Guy was very rude and was no help. Went to local autozone and pepboys to try and piece everything back to help me pass smog test. Ive purchased new pcv valve, smog pump, air check valve, and smog pump belt, and 2 air injection pipes. Truck has EGR valve, purge canister. Not sure what else is needed or where to find it. Think im headed to junk yard to see what i might be able to see and find. I know im gonna need bracket to mount smog pump, and diverter valve. and few hose's. Any info or pics of how its supposed to look would be great.

I think the state you live in is going to be your biggest problem. The truck didn't have a 350 to begin with so adding all the smog devises still wont make it legal.I would at least make sure the cat or cats are installed and in good condition and hope for the best.

Oh thats not good. Is there anyway to make it legal threw a mechanic and not cost a arm and a leg. Ive done 1 smog test and it didnt pass because the idle speed hc was high. They wernt much help telling me what might be the problem. Hmm, would a purchasing a code reader tell me if a O2 sensor or something not be working. Im not a mechanic but do have some hands on most minor and some major car/truck issues.

The law varies from state to state, and in your case county to county. Here are a couple of links that might help.

You need to read them carefully. It looks like, from a quick scan, that the important thing is to pass the emissions test.
They don't talk much about an equipment inspection.
Plus, if you don't live or drive in certain counties, you don't need to be inspected.

Plus, you may be eligible for a waiver after spending a certain amount on repairs, so keep your receipts.

If all else fails, it looks like you could convert it to Propane and it would be exempt.

According to that one site, if it were newer, all they do is hook a scanner up and if there are no codes set, its assumed to be OK........

My 79 had all the emission stuff gone as well. The diagram on the radiator support will tell you what you need and the routing. A service manual will give you the parts list and routing as well. The only problem I had was one of the ported vacuum switches had three different types (colors). I picked one and it worked. My truck ran better with the emission stuff on it.

Most federal standards take the radiator sticker as what's required to pass the visual inspection.

My 89 didn't come with a smog pump...it did come with a 350...I passed sniffer emissions in Texas with it after I rubbed on the new crate motor... seems you should be able to see all you need to see from a Chilton/Haynes manual

You can easily pass a 350 for a 305 so I wouldn't worry about that.
Did you change the Oil?
fresh oil would help a lot in the HC but so would a CAT.
If your Air injection is not working properly the CAT wouldn't either.

thx for all the info. Been a lil busy fixing a house. Getting it ready to rent out. Which means more cash flow for my toys. LOL!!!

The engine doesn't matter. I lived in North LasVegas for years up until 2004, my 81 CJ origanally came with a straight 6, I put a 304 V-8 in it. No problemmo!!! Just make sure on that 89 that you have a working egr, cat, and an 0-2 sensor. You can have headers if you want, I did.

i dont no what laws u have out there but i got my 89 to pass with a carbed 400hp 350 in it. the guys at the shop didnt care whats in it luckly. i just took off my "normal" exhaust and put on a "emissions friendly" exhaust. i got 4 old cats from my friends, welded 2 together. then the other 2 together. then got cheap header flanges welded those onto the 2 sets of cats and i had a ghetto dual exhaust with 4 cats on it:whistle: passed with flying colors:o

Sorry havnt been back to chat. Life is very busy. Not enough hrs in the day to do everything. Had it smogged and it passed, but since it doesnt have the pump and diverter valuve on vehicle. Whether it works or not. It fails because of those parts missing. Went to junk yard and found simlar year jimmy and grabbed parts off it. But now mounting bracket doesnt line up even close to temp it. Getting a lil down about this. But Im a trooper and will beat this minor problem. So guess my question is what to do. Now theres a lil sticker under hood that both smog tech looked for that has emission diagram on it. If I rub that off you think they wont know and pass it. But still gonna look for the right bracket or maybe prefab one up.

To me it doesnt make much sense if a vehicle can pass the smog, it should be good. Im just saying. LOL!!!!! Anyway to fight this or is it a losing battle.

the only way i see is,get all the correct parts or find someone that doesnt care and will pass it off like u have everything correct under the hood.

I failed the visual one year because I knocked a vacuum hose off from the canister while I was crawling around under the hood. It passed everything else. I plugged the hose back in when they told me it failed. They would not allow it to pass because it failed the visual, when they looked, even though it was obvious. I drove out of the inspection bay, got back in line, went through the ENTIRE emission testing and it passed.
