Engine Bay Clean up

I recently got a 81 K5 Blazer with what I think is the original 305 engine. I want to pull out all of the fuel canister stuff under the hood, does anyone have any good pointers on what I should keep versus what I should get rid of? Eventually I will drop in a larger motor when money prevails.

I'd keep the carbon canister. It doesn't hurt anything, helps keep the gas in your tank from becomming part of the atmosphere, and probably even increases your fuel mileage a hair.

This refers to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) memorandum that says it's illegal to remove, disconnect or disable a required emissions control device on any pollution controlled motor vehicle (PCMV), pretty much any 1968 (1966 in California) or later model year car/light duty vehicle used on public roads. What this means is that even if you don't have a local emissions-testing requirement, technically you can still break federal law by chucking/disabling your vehicle's smog equipment.

Not always.

I have a 72 Pontiac Ventura II with zero smog control devices and it runs as clean as my wife's 96 Grand Am. It's largely a matter of keeping it in good tune if you decide to take off the smog equipment.
 
snuffy74, you might be right (although I doubt it). In this case the charcoal canister has nothing with how clean a car runs. It has to do with how clean it is when parked :-) it captures hydrocarbons when the fuel tries to evaporate in the tank.

I would keep the system. Not only does it keep down fuel fumes in the car while running it keeps the fuel in your tank from evaporating so quickly. usually removing the system results in difficulties venting your fuel system properly without fumes permeating you very being.

With this particular smog device, removing it will not help your horsepower in the slightest. In the end it is your call tho.

You're right. I somehow read into it that he wanted to chuck all of his smog equipment instead of just the smog canister. My bad. I can't even blame it on alcohol or sickness, just assumption. :doah:
