Engine braking feature ???

It almost sounds like he might not be using a lockup converter. That's the only thing I can think of, when the converter is locked it acts almost like a clutch instead of slipping, that acts to slow the vehicle when you let off the gas without hitting the brake to unlock the converter.

I was thinking the same, but I would think a non lockup would hurt fuel mileage, especially on the highway , either way I can't see a 6mpg gain.

No way it is going to gain mileage unless the gearing is really poor. The effect of the lockup is to reduce engine RPM which has a slight increase in mileage normally. I can't imagine gaining 6 MPG by using a non-lockup converter, I know the mileage from Krusty went down to about 11 from 13 when I switched to a non-lockup converter.

I don't know much about the internals of a 700r4, but sounds like he got his OD fixed.
Having never tore a OD trans. apart I don't know if this is electronic(solenoids?) or mechanical.
Either way doesn't sound like your getting anything special here.
The only thing I could think of in the order of trans. braking is maybe stall speed of the converter. Stall speed is where the RPM of the engine causes the converter to couple
the engine and tranny. The converter is basically a "clutch" and the stall speed is basically the point where it is "fully" engaged.
Ever drop it into low an chirp the tires?

Damn I type slow... 3 other posts while I was typing mine

I'm not an auto trans expert, but I do know that it has nothing to do with the converter. I think engine braking is controlled by the band. I put a manual valve body in a TH-400 once and the destructions said to remove the band. After that the car did not engine brake at all.

BTW... the guy thinks that 5 speeds are better on gas because you can step on the clutch and coast whenever you are not on the gas.... Who does that? 5 Speeds are better on gas because there is less rotating mass and it has a solid mechanical coupling rather than a fluid one with slip and therefore loss.

Yep you can prevent most autos from having engine braking

The engine braking is really nice for offroading, though. Put it in low range, grab a lower gear and do the descents without any brakes. It's better if it only goes away when you select "D".
