Engine Builders Read!

How the hell could an automotive engine machinist do block work for a 383 without the components that are going in the engine, so that proper clearances could be checked or created?

He did block work, i wanted to assemble

Did he have the pistons and rings in hand so he could bore and hone the block for the proper size and bore finish?

Just my $0.02... I recently finished my 383 TBI build, and I did get it balanced. The machinist notched my block for the rods and the rear crank counterweight.

However, I only had to do some "metal forming" on the oil pan with a hammer for the rear counterweight. I made sure the oil pan was clear by setting it on the block without the gasket or the bolts. I did a slow rotation of the crank and looked for the oil pan to move. I figured with the extra clearance the gasket provides, I'd be OK.

Seems to work fine. :)

he had everything except crank, flywheel, and balancer, as I said, no balancing, and no align honing. just mag., bore, hone

Also, off the subject, but will the iron gear from my msd distributor work with my roller cam or do I need a bronze one.

I believe that is solely dependent on the camshaft maker.

GM stuff has always been the same gear composition that I am aware of, while early aftermarket roller cams needed softer distributor gears.

The roller Crane I bought a couple of years back didn't require me to change the distributor gear.
