I've got a block that is being sold as a core. The casting # is 3970010.According to Chuck's Chevy Pages,it could be a 302,327,or 350 2 or 4 bolt mains. Is there any way to tell for sure the displacement? Also,I haven't ventured into the realm of engines yet and was hoping someone would have a pic of a 2 AND 4 bolt main so I know what it is I'm looking for.Thanks.

My K5 came from the PO with a 327 with those same numbers. It was some "Power-Pak" rebuilt motor, but it was a 327.

From http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4

So, yeah, could be anything.

Flip the motor over, with the oil pan off. See

See how each of the five up-and-down bits have four bolts in them? (They're main bearing caps, thus the name "main.") That's a four-bolt main. (This one is my bigblock, but the same idea applies to you.)

Now ... to tell displacement. Scott may chime in with something smarter, but I would presume that if you can measure the cylinder diameter accurately (caliper or micrometer), that would be a good start to tell if it's a 302/327/350.

Do you have the heads that belong to it? Their casting #'s might enlighten us.

How about 462624?

462624.....75-86...350/400......76cc chamber, 1.72/1.5, 1.94/1.5 or 2.02/1.6 valves

Which would make your block a 350, methinks.

The 3970010 block is a 4" bore which was shared with the 302, 327 and also a 350. If it is a 4 bolt main then it is definately a 350 as GM never made a 4 bolt 302 or 327. Also that casting number head is a 350 head as well. The difference between the 3 engines was the stroke, a 302 had a 3" stroke, 327 had a 3.25" stroke and a 350 with a 3.48" stroke. There were 2 different 327's as well, there was the small journal which was up until 1967 then in 1968 they went to the large journal which is the same as a 350.
