Engine CID ID

Then it's not an original engine, if that helps or hurts. :)

Looking down on the engine from above, passenger side just behind the alternator (typical) there is a flat "pad" on the block (not head) that you would be able to read.

Wouldn't be uncommon for the *stampings* (small and sometimes kind of light) to be obscured by years of crud.

the pad is "glowing" in this pic, because i've got a flashlight shining on it. a long thin gasket scraper should take enough crud off, then hit it with some brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner. if this area is perfectly smooth, the block has been decked.

it should have 2 numbers on it, the top row are the engine numbers, and the bottom row is a partial VIN from the vehicle it came out of.

ALL 305 chevy engines up until 1985 were internal balanced. Starting in 1986 when GM came out with the 1 piece rear main seal engines then the 305's and the 350's were external balanced ONLY on the REAR.

The reason I said I KNOW it was a 305, is cause I had to replace head gaskets 1 year after I installed it.

could've been a 267 too, IIRC they shared the 305's 3.75" bore, and were of roughly the same vintage (79-82)
