I finally got a code reader and one code it gave me is 45. Trouble with est. electronic spark timer. Is this the distributor? Tried to search and haven't found anything on it. My engine has been bogging down under a load. If I'm accelerating it will bog down then come back to life or if I'm cruising down the highway it will be running fine then randomly will feel like the engine is gonna cut out then comes back. It's been also 2 years. I haven't drive it much lately but I want to get it road worthy again

1988 k5. I may have mixed up the code numbers. I did get another reading of an o2 sensor reading rich as well. When I get home I'll check the notes

If you mixed up a DTC 42 which is for the EST... just clear the code by removing power to ECM and try again. Error 42 will set when you disconnect bypass to set timing.

I had two other codes that were showing.....one was for the vss sensor and the other was for the egr valve. I reconnected the speedo cable. A while ago when I was trying to figure out what was going on with the rig I read that the egr may be causing the trouble and I tried blocking it off. (it didn't work). So I removed the block and got that back to stock order. I disconnected the battery to try and reset the ecm. I took her out for a cruise and in the beginning it was doing the same stuttering thing. The CEL came on then shut off. after 10 minutes of driving the stuttering goes away and ran pretty well. When I got back the read the codes again and the only code i'm getting now is 45 for a rich o2 sensor.

any recommendations for o2 sensor brands? i'm probably gonna throw a new one in tomorrow.

Or you could get a good O2 sensor and a pigtail from the parts store for 1/3 that price?

But a Rich O2 sensor code is very rarely a faulty O2 sensor. It's usually something causing a rich condition like... fuel pressure to high, bad injector, mis fire on spark plug, vacuum leak etc...

RockAuto the Walker O2 sensor is $21. and the Bosch is $22.

Pigtail is $12 at Oreiellys, couldn't find it at RockAuto...

AC/Delco is the best O2 sensor.

Your O2 sensor is cheaper because it's not heated like the one above, one wire.

Still doubt it will fix your issue. But O2 sensors do get lazy with age and should be replaced, they are often overlooked in maintenance.

I recently replaced the fuel pump. I've been getting a steady 11.5 on a gauge behind the tbi unit.

Is Bosch parts good? I see them at autozone or advanced but I thought they were on the cheaper end. If they're decent I'll pick I one up today and try it. If not I'll order one and just wait on the shipping.

I'm gonna check spark plugs today and see how they look

I'd steer clear of Bosch platinum plugs--chevy V8's dont like them at all for some strange reason...go with AC or Autolite's..

I've seen so many chevy V8's skip after installing Bosch plugs that I'd never use them...neither will many mechanics I know after installing some customers provided and had to go back and remove them and put AC's in--which instantly cured the skip or "dead cylinder" that appeared after Bosch's were put in..

Does that go for the o2 sensors as well? I have ac delco spark plugs in currently but I wanna try his 3 wire o2 sensor upgrade

My friend uses a lot of other bosch parts from Autozone like o2 sensors and fuel pumps, filters, plug wires, coils, etc with no issues, but their spark plugs just plain suck in chevy's...no one can understand why either--he has put the "dead" plugs he removed in other engines that took the same plugs and they ran OK...:dunno:..and its often the #1 plug that seems to not fire properly most of the time too...wierd!..

Yup delco plugs only for TBI engines. Bosch sensors are great. I have had great luck with them.

after finally getting the new three wire o2 sensor in I took her for a joy ride and she drove great. no sputtering no bogging no CEL. granted I only drove it around for 20 minutes it still drove better then it has the past 2 years. hopefully it wasn't a fluke and it lasts awhile.
