Engine Decoding Help

FWIW, RG8 coax, even with the light green milspec dielectric Does Not make good plug wires.
Runs for about 10 minutes max with stock ignition before the first misfire hits. And if you are not close by, you walk home.

But thats another story........

I've always went by casting numbers. Seems more accurate. And I have, 1 time, ran across a block a buddy had where the casting number said one thing and that code on the front said another. Anyone with a set of number stamps can change that is what we came up with for an answer to that dilemma.

Casting number can be seen with a cellphone by the way :waytogo:.. click a pic and zoom. Clean if necessary and do again.

I'll try and get the casting off of the back of the block.

I've had plenty of 350's before and when the ad said it had a 327 I got all happy cause I had neve had one and I know they're not the most common SBC out there.

If it was a 327 I was planning on dressing it up and throwing a few parts at it.

No big deal if it's a 305... It runs pretty damn well. I have an '04 LQ4 (6.0 gas engine/ 2004 Yukon Denali) sitting in my garage with a 224/230 114 LSA Comp Cam and a set of the higher flowing 243 casting heads that will find it's way into this truck, hopefully this winter's project.

This truck has a Saginaw 3 speed in it currently which I believ to have come out of a car or something, it's definitely not original to this truck.

Planning on a 2wd NV4500 behind the 6.0. I've got a 4x4 NV4500 listed on Craigslist, nobody seems to want to trade a 2wd version for my 4x4 one.

Older GM 2WD trucks did indeed come factory with three speed manual transmissions--they used Muncie,Saginaw, and some even had Tremec 3 speeds,I had a Tremec in my '75 2WD Blazer when I first got it,it had a 250 six with that behind it factory..

I recall almost breaking the bell housing off trying to pry that transmission free to replace the clutch--it was then I learned a Tremec had a 5th bolt up on the top, instead of the usual 4 bolts to attach it to the bell housing..:doah:

I put a Saginaw 4 speed in it eventually from a '75 Chevy Vega,it was practically a bolt in deal, all I had to do was use the shifter it came with and carve a new hole in the floor hump for it..

I know GM used some "top loader" Ford 3 speeds in some 60's GM full sized cars, like Pontiac Tempest/Lemans,Buicks,and Oldsmobiles-,they were not common, but did exist---rumors say some 2WD 1/2 ton pickups had them too,but I've never seen one..

Strangest "factory" tranny/engine combo I've seen, was a 1961 ,1 ton 2WD Chevy Suburban,it had a 235 straight six,and a factory Clark 5 speed trans, that was about the same size as the engine!..it also had torsion bar front suspension, and everyone thought that was "new" when GM reintroduced it on the '88 & up new style trucks !..
The truck also had a huge rear diff, looked like an Eaton, and very low gearing,at least 4:56's or lower too..
